You would have the ability to provide supervision of assigned laboratories/departments in all locations of the hospital.  The scope of service includes both anatomical pathology and clinical pathology.  You would manage, plan, service, organize and control the activities of personnel engaged in the collection and transport of patient specimens. You would also process and handle laboratory specimens in the generation of timely and accurate test results in accordance with the express standards of accrediting agencies, the Medical Director and the UPMC Health System.  

This role will report to the Executive Director for administrative matters and to the Medical Director for technical matters.  While you would maintain familiarity with all technical aspects of the core laboratory including methodology, instrumentation and maintenance, you would also have accountability to patients and the medical staff servicing those patients. To do this, you would use a wide range of independent judgment and discretion in order to coordinate the efforts of the particular laboratory/department for the maximum benefit of patients served.

  • Define and communicate section functions, workflow, personnel duties and schedules. 
  • Help to plan and perform employee interviewing, training and orientation, continuing education, competency assessments and performance appraisals.  
  • Evaluate and recommend test methods and instruments for the section.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and use of instruments with thorough documentation. Ensure efficient and effective supply management for sections maintaining proper inventories. Support all organizational safety regulations and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Supervise and assist with performance and reporting of all technical procedures of the section. Maintain current technical procedure manuals. Ensure communication of contents to staff.
  • Participate in development of long-range plans for department development. Communicate department plans and goals to section staff and expedites implementation. Maintain sufficient qualified and trained staff to meet department and section goals.
  • Collaborate in development of capital equipment, operations and personnel budgets of all Lab departments. Maintain section procedures and practices in accordance with CAP, JCAHO, CLIA, and Pennsylvania State Department of Health standards.
  • Enforce and adhere to lab compliance policies. Maintain well-documented and effective quality control program in section. Collaborate in development of internal quality assurance indicators and continuous quality improvement activities. Ensure effectiveness of data collection activities.
  • Expedite continuing education activities within section to support technical expertise of staff. Monitor actions of laboratory staff, coaches, and initiates progressive disciplinary action when appropriate.  
  • Promote positive interdisciplinary relations and ensure ongoing problem solving by participating in committees and specialty work groups.
  • Review and categorize lab reporting errors in a timely manner and takes immediate corrective action and communicate to management when necessary.   Review and investigate complaints concerning the laboratory and its personnel and take corrective action when necessary.  
  • Perform special projects as assigned.


  • B.S. degree in Science required. 
  • 6 years of Med Tech experience.  
  • 2 of which must be in a leadership or supervisory capacity preferred. 
  • Analytical ability and knowledge necessary to develop, analyze, and update testing procedures, monitor quality control, direct the resolution of technical problems, and evaluate and interpret results. 
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to interact in a professional manner with various levels of hospital personnel, including medical staff, nursing, administrative, etc. 
  • Supervisory skills necessary to organize, direct, and control the activities of the laboratory and office staff.
