Description

Purpose:
Obtain detailed information from patients and perform a variety of diagnostic tests to the eyes, to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of eye disease and disorders of vision.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist staff and physicians to promote timely and efficient patient flow
  • Assist with in office procedures such as lasers or injections as needed.
  • Assist with maintaining Department of Health and Physician Services Division Safety guidelines and regulations.
  • Assist with maintaining office inventory including checking expirations and reordering of stock. Restocking of exam rooms. Cleaning and sterilizing of instruments. Cleaning/Wet tasking of rooms and maintaining overall appearance of office.
  • Assist with maintenance and calibration of instruments and equipment.
  • Assist with patient correspondence/letters.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality of records and patient reported information.
  • Patient work up- medical history, chief complaint, family medical history, obtain visual acuity near and distant, refraction, color vision assessment, applanation tonometry and tonopen, confrontation fields, pupil assessment, extraocular muscle assessment, lensometry, blood pressure measurement, keratometry, pachymetry and other testing as needed. Obtain test results and patient related correspondence. Maintain a pleasant rapport with patients.
  • Perform all responsibilities in a manner that demonstrates appropriate behavior toward staff, peers and other departmental personnel as defined in the UPMC/UPP job performance standards.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and
  • Two (2) years of experience in a related Ophthalmology or Optometric setting required (or an equivalent combination of related education and/or experience)
  • Completion of the AAO Home Study Course preferred.
  • Flexible and may be asked to travel to satellite offices as needed. Knowledge of various ophthalmic equipment used to perform Pachymetry, Auto Refractor, BAT (Glare testing), PAM (potential acuity meter) and Corneal Topography.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
    Current COA or COT certification is strongly preferred.

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
