Description

Purpose:

UPMC Center for Emergency Medicine is hiring a Full-Time Aviation Radio Operator to help support the Communications Center located within UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh/Oakland, PA. The Aviation Radio Operator will work rotating 12 hour shifts with rotating nights and weekends. The primary schedule will work 7 days on and 7 days off but may be subject to change.

The STAT MedEvac Aviation Department Radio Operator will actively monitor all aspects of assigned flights in coordination with the Flight Followers. This includes but is not limited to the determination of aircraft status, flight tracking, in-flight communication, termination of flights not meeting company standards, and coordination with the Pilot in Command to ensure the safe completion of a flight.

Responsibilities:
  • Actively participates in development of the CEM safety culture. Utilizes appropriate safety channels to report safety concerns, and utilizes available tools to enhance a safe work environment.
  • Adheres to uniform policy and personal appearance standards.
  • Complete all official documentation accurately and in a timely manner, including payroll, expense reports, training forms etc.
  • Coordinate flight operations with and between airborne aircraft.
  • Coordinate operational needs for the Pilot in Command as necessary.
  • Coordinate with the communications center for solutions to problems caused by operational issues.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of all pertinent FARs and thorough knowledge of all CEM procedures including the GOM, OpSpecs, Training Manual and other applicable guidance.
  • Ensures adequate coverage by remaining on duty until each released flight has been terminated or until properly relieved by another radio operator with whom a thorough pass down brief has been completed.
  • Inform Pilot in Command of all traffic, flight, destination conditions and temporary flight restrictions that may affect safety or completion of a flight, and any other information pertinent to a given aviation operation.
  • Initiate activation of the Post Accident Incident Plan if contact is lost with an aircraft for more than thirty minutes.
  • Maintain positive flight following of all CEM aircraft to include current information on the progress of every flight.
  • Maintains fitness for duty by adhering to all employee health requirements, including hearing conservation program, and required medical certifications. Reports injuries and completes the appropriate documentation, no matter how seemingly minor the injuries, to a supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Protects the privacy of all patient information in accordance with the STAT MedEvac privacy policies, procedures, and practices, as required by federal and state laws.
  • Provides adequate notice of requested PTO, trade days, etc. to ensure schedule coverage; maintains ultimate responsibility for coverage of assigned shifts.
  • Reports for work well rested and fit for duty. Adheres to the drug and alcohol policy at all times, to include FAA requirements regarding the use of over the counter and prescription medications.

Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent experience 
  • Basic Knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations and HEMS Operations 
  • Good aviation radio skills and abilities 
  • Basic computer skills 
  • Excellent communication skills 
  • Control Tower Operator license or equivalent experience with good radio skills, or FAA Private Pilot License with Instrument Rating or equivalent experience, or FAA Commercial or Airline Transport Pilot License with Instrument Rating, or FAA Dispatcher Certificate preferred 
  • AA/AS degree having aviation/medical dispatch applications preferred 
  • One year of experience in a helicopter EMS dispatch environment preferred

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
