The System Nursing Resources (SNR) team; part of UPMC Corporate Services is actively seeking Operating Room Trained ( OR) RN’s interested in joining our nursing team.

Our Full time RN staff, known as the OR Nursing SWAT team, travels to various Pittsburgh area UPMC facilities as needed for Short or Long term assignments. These nurses work in Operating Rooms within a hospital in order to support patient care during leaves of absences, for high volume coverage, or to support the Operating Room while vacancies are filled. SWAT nurses function as an integral part of the assigned OR’s team, working a variety of shifts and assignments. Swat OR RN’s will not be assigned to ON CALL unless they chose to participate and the Business Unit approves.

Systemwide Nursing Resources (SNR) SWAT team positions receive full-time benefits as well as increased compensation @ $39.00/hr with shift differential to reward their flexibility. While on assignments in our many UPMC facilities our nurses gain rare, impressive, and highly desirable professional experiences and build widely varied skill sets. 

The SWAT RN-OR Nurse has the authority, responsibility, and shift accountability for the delivery of OR nursing care through the use of the nursing process. In collaboration with the Nursing leaders and other health care professionals, these RNs apply competent clinical knowledge and skills to achieve quality care outcomes. 

The SWAT RN-OR Nurse will be utilized to fill shifts in all Operating Rooms of high need throughout the UPMC system. Nurses must be willing to work at all Allegheny County UPMC facilities in addition to UPMC Horizon and UPMC Jameson and must accept assignments as determined by a System Nursing Resource representative. 

Nurses on this team must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide intraoperative nursing care that is relevant to patients in the Operating Room. They also must possess the ability to assess and interpret patient data needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific needs.


Responsibilities:

  • Float to various UPMC Pittsburgh facilities for short and long-term nursing assignments.
  • Assume responsibility for complex assignments and views problems as challenges.
  • Collaborate with physician and intraoperative care team to ensure quality patient care.
  • Report and record all changes observed in condition or behavior of patients.
  • Comply with established medication use policies.
  • Respond to emergent situations and initiates appropriate actions.
  • Strictly adhere to all policies and practices relative to patient care and hospital related information.
  • Comply with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions.
  • Document in the medical record and intraoperative record according to established procedures.
  • Take action to improve knowledge, skills and performance based on feedback or on self-identified developmental needs.
  • Prior to performing new or challenging skills, requests assistance and reviews relevant policies and procedures.
  • Establish appropriate, assertive and professional communication strategies.
  • Strengthen interdisciplinary relationships with members of the health care team.
  • Communicate patient's condition to physician and other key members of the health care team.
  • Seek out appropriate nursing, physician or other health care team intervention.
  • Constructively receive feedback and direction Identify and communicates learning needs to appropriate manager. Serve as a resource for staff and other disciplines. Take action to improve knowledge, skills and performance based on feedback or on self-identified developmental needs. Prior to performing new or challenging skills, requests assistance and reviews relevant policies and procedures.
  • Establish appropriate, assertive and professional communication strategies. Strengthen interdisciplinary relationships with members of the health care team. Communicate patient's condition to physician and other key members of the health care team. Seek out appropriate nursing, physician or other health care team intervention. Coordinate interdepartmental activities to expedite care. Contribute to the universal unit activities, including but not limited to responding to call lights and telephone, passing meal trays and patient transports.
  • Function independently with one day orientation, unless otherwise specified. Maintain critical thinking skills, analytical and problem solving abilities as related to various aspects of patient care. Cultivate professional relationships and communication in the clinical environment. Must be able to function in two specialty areas of OR nursing. Communicate educational needs when necessary. Maintain contact availability for schedule changes when needed. Must be flexible in scheduling to the requirements of the unit assigned. Strictly adhere to all policies and practices relative to patient care and hospital related information.
  • Maintain critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of nursing.
  • Respond to emergent situations and initiates appropriate actions. Coordinate, provide, and evaluate patient/family education. Strictly adhere to all policies and practices relative to patient care and hospital related information. Comply with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions. Ensure equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department, i.e. Maintenance or Biomedical Engineering. Document in the medical record according to established procedures. Perform work in a timely and productive manner.
  • Utilize nursing process in managing the care of patients including assessment, interdisciplinary planning, implementation, evaluation of patient care, teaching and discharge planning. Assume responsibility for complex assignments and views problems as challenges. Provide basic psychosocial support and counseling. Maintain standards of nursing care and utilizes standards as a guide for practice. Collaborate with physician and care team to ensure quality patient care. Report and record all changes observed in condition or behavior of patients. Comply with established medication use policies.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated competence in operating room professional nursing practice. 
  • Minimum of 3 years operating room nursing experience required. 
  • Must be able to circulate independently in general surgery, GYN surgery, Orthopedic, and urology surgery cases. 
  • Must be able to pass all UPMC required testing for Registered Nurses. 
  • SWAT Nurses must agree to be available to work 72 hours in a bi-weekly pay period and will follow the scheduling requirements of the operating room department assigned. 
  • The ability to scrub in any specialty is preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Older Adult Protective Services Act
