Purpose:

Assist in the coordination of the service's support to the investigational drug studies in the UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside inpatient and outpatient facilities. This includes distribution and control functions, administrative functions, clinical services, educational, and research support with regard to daily operations. These services will be provided in compliance with state and federal regulations, JCAHO standards, the University of Pittsburgh Institutional Review Board (IRB), and the mission, policies and procedures of the hospital and department.

Responsibilities:
  • Assure all adverse investigational drug reactions recognized by investigational drug personnel are reported appropriately by UPMC policy.
  • Coordinate activities of IDS team for billing, including monitoring of revenue recovery. Billing services may be designated to appropriate investigational drug service personnel as appropriate.
  • Coordinate day-to-day operations of investigational drug service by supervising activities of investigational drug service pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy students.
  • Coordinate education, including orientation and training of new investigational drug employees, students, residents, and new pharmacists regarding IDS workflow and procedures.
  • Demonstrate and provide a service oriented towards investigators, research staff, ancillary pharmacy staff and patients.
  • Direct the IDS team to resolve issues dealing with service methodologies, clinical aspects of investigational drug use and personnel management. Consult IDS Director as necessary.
  • Ensure all medications dispensed from main investigational drug service have been prepared, checked, and documented appropriately.
  • Follow-up on errors involving investigational medications, by filing appropriate paper work, and notifying appropriate personnel. Provide and implement corrective action plans to reduce errors from reoccurring.
  • In addition to Coordinator role, perform clinical activities of IDS staff pharmacists.
  • In addition to Coordinator role, perform distributive and operational activities of the IDS staff pharmacists and technicians.
  • In conjunction with IDS Director, help to prepare, maintain and submit comprehensive accurate reports and financial reports to appropriate administrative personnel as required.
  • In conjunction with the IDS Director, establish, maintain and communicate investigational drug service policies, procedures to pharmacy staff, and clients as appropriate.
  • In conjunction with the IDS Director, help establish and maintain quality assurance program(s) for the investigational drug service.
  • Insure compliance with all state and federal regulations concerning investigational drugs.
  • Maintain appropriate communications with University IRB and Clinical Trials Office, including but not limited to providing review letters of protocols to primary investigator.
  • Maintain communication with IDS Director and Pharmacy Operations Director of UPMC-P as necessary.
  • Meet with company representatives and study coordinators during site initiation, monitoring or close-out visits. Designate to appropriate investigational drug service personnel as necessary.
  • Prepare adequate dispensing procedures for various protocols, including standing orders, dispensing instructions and appropriate labeling.
  • Prepare and administer IDS team annual performance evaluations.
  • Prepare and maintain comprehensive and accurate records, including but not limited to drug accountability, drug manufacturing, volume indicators, and revenue recovery.
  • Provide accurate complete and timely answers to drug information questions as necessary. Designate to appropriate investigational drug personnel as necessary.
  • Provide educational information for medical, nursing, pharmacy and allied professionals concerning the use of investigational pharmaceuticals as necessary. In-services, meetings, or formal presentations may accomplish this.
  • Serve as role model for pharmacy externship students during rotations, by providing structured learning activities and providing constructive feedback on work.
  • Supervise compounding and preparation of investigational agents prepared by investigational service personnel.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited school of pharmacy, or other advanced degrees within pharmacy, i.e. Doctor of Pharmacy, Masters of Pharmacy are acceptable.
  • Four years of hospital pharmacy experience is required.
  • Previous experience or familiarity with investigational drug control procedures, protocol design and understanding of federal, state regulations is required
  • Previous leadership experience is preferred.
  • Previous hospital or inpatient pharmacy experience preferred. 
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written is required.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • Pharmacist

Salary Range: $37.21 to $64.26
