Magee-Womens Hospital is hiring casual Patient Care Technicians to work in the Resource Pool. Employees of the Resource Pool float to various units throughout the hospital.

Casual employees are typically required to work a minimum of 8 hours every 2 weeks, for a minimum of 16 hours per month.

Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are vital partners in the patient care provided at UPMC. They work on patient care units and perform a variety of important basic and advanced skills. They work closely and continuously with patients, partnering with nurses and other professionals, to make a big difference in how patients recover and experience their hospital stay.

NON NURSING SCHOOL PROGRAM STUDENTS - Please note that this job opening is for candidates currently enrolled in a Nursing School Program only. • Bathing / showering patients, cleaning up soiled patients and beds, walking patients in the room, to the bathroom, and in the hallway.

• Re-positioning patients in bed, assisting them in and out of beds, bedside chairs, and wheelchairs, as well as on and off patient carriers (with assistance as needed).

• Helping patients to walk with canes, walkers, and crutches.

• Preparing patients for meals, feeding patients, filling water pitchers, restocking supplies, and preparing rooms for new admissions.

• Transporting patients, by pushing them in wheelchairs or on carts, to and from tests and other units.

• Assisting with post- life physical care.

• Performing basic clinical skills such as weighing patients, taking blood pressures/ pulses/ respirations, emptying urine collection bags and measuring the urine, as well as emptying and measuring the fluid from drains.

• Testing blood sugars by finger stick.

• Depending upon the role a PCT may also perform several advanced skills such as drawing blood, performing EKGs (heart monitor tracings), changing simple wound dressings, removing bladder catheters, and removing IV catheters from veins.

• Some units may require clerical and telephone work.

• Performing other duties as assigned


• High school diploma or equivalent.

• If no previous hospital or pre-hospital training, successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class OR successful completion of first year of clinical work in a nursing program.

• Successful completion of basic information system training.

• Microcomputer experience preferred.

• Current enrollment in a Nursing School Program, completion of at least one clinical rotation.

• Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
