UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is actively seeking a full-time Senior Director of Medical Oncology Operations, to be based out of our main location in the Shadyside neighborhood in the City of Pittsburgh. This position will work standard daylight hours, Monday through Friday, with some travel as needed to our practice locations throughout Western Pennsylvania.

The Senior Director of Medical Oncology Operations is responsible for the leadership and management of all operations within the Medical Oncology sites within the network of the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. As Senior Director, your responsibilities will include high-level management of front end revenue cycle operations, general practice operations, quality assurance/CQI, and overall physician support. You will lead a team of Regional Operations Managers who are spread across our more than 40 practice sites. Together with your management team, you will identify opportunities to improve patient safety and participate in projects and programs designed to reduce errors, improve processes, and to create a mindfulness culture for patient safety.

A highly visible role within our organization, this role will serve as a key member of the senior oncology service line team. This position reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center.

Responsibilities:
  • Supervises and oversees budget development, including operational and capital budgets.
  • Responsible for operating each site to budgeted fiscal goals.
  • Monitors and analyzes financial performance, including profitability and volume metrics. Implements appropriate changes to increase efficiencies, enhance revenue, and control expenses.
  • Maintains staffing at budgeted levels or can justify increases/decreases based on site volumes.
  • Maintains supply and total expenses at budgeted levels or can justify increases/decreases based on site volumes.
  • Oversees billing and revenue capture initiatives.
  • Oversees new construction, renovation projects, and business utilization. Assess existing needs and plans for new programs to meet the site's needs.
  • Responsible for the operations of over 40 UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Medical Oncology sites.
  • Manages and mentors a team of Regional Operations Managers.
  • Works collaboratively with all aspects of the oncology service line team to drive efficiency and standardization of programs and process.
  • Monitors operating statistics and patterns to identify trends and changes across sites as well as the external environment.
  • Maintains a current in-depth knowledge of resource-based value scales (i.e. physician productivity) and their impact on operations.
  • Through positive leadership techniques influences and oversees management team and staff.
  • Develops/Implements/Administers network policies and procedures to standardize quality patient care at each site.
  • Manages fairly and consistently.
  • Produces high quality work in a timely fashion to meet established deadlines. Work is accurate and substantiated by fact.

  • Assesses personnel and equipment needs and makes recommendations for changes based on fact and financial return.
  • Conducts regularly-scheduled site meetings and keeps staff well-informed and answers questions without delay.
  • Establishes performance improvement and CQI strategies, using PDCA and the 7 step process.
  • Provide effective financial oversight of all sites by balancing expenses against budget.
  • Manages effectively through others by establishing predetermined goals and objectives. Utilizes techniques for inspecting results in a consistent and reportable manner.
  • Utilizing a 'shared governance approach works collaborative with directors, managers, and staff in the operations of all sites.
  • Utilizes effective communication techniques with customers, staff, management, physicians, and senior leadership in daily operations.
  • Assists with new site development, renovation planning and new practice integrations.
  • Oversees the site QA program and establishes meaningful, measurable QA programs.
  • Identifies patient flow and operational efficiencies and standardize across network
  • In partnership with clinical administration, ensures all aspects of network practices are compliant.
  • Remains knowledgeable of regulatory standards that guide practice operations.

Qualifications

  • Graduate Degree (i.e. MS or PhD.) in health care or equivalent
  • 5 years of progressive management experience.
  • Previous oncology experience strongly preferred
  • Previous experience leading multiple practice sites strongly preferred
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills necessary.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
