University of Pittsburgh Physicians is currently seeking an APP Resident Physician Assistants (PA) or Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP) within the Critical Care Medicine Department This is a 12 month postgraduate training program for APPs sponsored by the UPMC Department of Critical Care Medicine. The position will work varying daylight shifts including night on-call 4 times per month.

This program is designed to attract and provide advanced training in critical care medicine to highly motivated physician assistants (PAs) and certified registered nurse practitioners (CRNPs). Based on the Department’s Multidisciplinary Critical Care Training Program (MCCTP) for physicians, the residents will train alongside their physician counterparts to learn intensive care medicine across a broad patient population including medical, general/cardiac/specialty surgical, trauma, solid organ transplant, and neuro-critical care among others.

The successful candidate will be placed according to years and months of experience for employment purposes.

  • Administers medications and injections in compliance with state law and hospital guidelines.
  • As a graduate medical learner, follow work hour requirements set forth by the academic program as determined by the program director and the Medical Director within the work hour guidelines as set forth by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education
  • Consults with attending physician or designee upon the identification of significant unexpected changes in patient status.
  • Participates in an educational program provided by the UPMC business unit, and is expected to satisfy the academic requirement of the program, as determined by the Program Director and the Medical Director.
  • Performs complete physical examinations and obtains complete medical history and records findings. Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures. Interprets and integrates data to determine preliminary diagnosis and therapeutic plan for critically ill or injured patients.
  • Performs selected invasive patient care procedures based on the patients needs as determined collaboratively by the physician supervisor and the Allied Health Credentialing Committee of the medical staff. Documents procedures, patient response/s and results in the patient record.
  • Provides continuity of patient care in collaboration with other health care professionals as appropriate.
  • Provides instructions, information and support to the patient/family regarding medications and treatments.
  • Under the direction and in consultation/collaboration with the attending physician or designee, diagnoses medical conditions and plans interventions, documents and communicates information to the health care team, and documents patient care services with a daily dictated or electronically generated note that conforms to documentation guidelines.


The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the patients served as specified below. They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.

  • The successful completion of an approved nurse practitioner program is required
  • BSN, MSN is preferred
  • Professional nursing experience and/or nurse practitioner experience is preferred
  • Acute Nurse Care Practitioner
  • A graduate of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the physician assistant (ARC-PA) is required
  • BS or MS candidate is preferred
  • Experience as a physician assistant and/or experience in a clinical setting is preferred

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families. 
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment. 
  • Critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care. 
  • Good clinical judgment. 
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of acceptable standards of practice. 
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity. 
  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients. 
This position is dependent upon successful attainment and maintenance of hospital privileges, if applicable to the Business Unit practice.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Current state RN license and CRNP certification are required
  • National certification, eligible for licensure by Pennsylvania board of nursing, eligible for certification as a CRNP by Pennsylvania state board of nursing
  • Current CPR certification is required
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • Acute Care Certification
  • A current state PA license, certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required
  • A current CPR certification is required
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
