Under the general direction of the Sr. Director, Distribution, Transportation & Logistics (or equivalent) the incumbent in this position is responsible for the optimization and coordination of all courier routes, processes and spend. This includes, right sizing schedules, projects, and justifying routes. Manage UPMC Courier transportation function across several business lines to ensure efficient and responsive customer service by leading and coaching a high-performance team and complying with federal, state and local regulations. To synchronize all aspects of Courier functions with other operations functions within UPMC. Oversee daily Courier operations (both in-sourced and outsourced) in an effective manner to meet or exceed established goals around safety, production, service levels, and quality metrics. Develop, utilize and obtain expert level proficiency in daily operations reporting and interpret results into meaningful action. Manage and lead a high performing, efficient courier transportation network and be able to measure and quantify impact of major business effects on the courier operation. Accountable for variances to plan in all measured Areas of Route Performance. Controlling costs through review of reports on OT, service levels, fleet maintenance, etc. Analyze and understand budget variance within operation; investigate and problem solve questionable data/reporting. Review reports, make recommendations for changes to improve financial performance.

  • Ability to review and interpret financial models as they relate to budgets and strategic planning
  • Business Partner/Local Business Team member: Subject matter expert, designs and implements customer logistics solutions, serves multiple facilities/BUs; monthly/quarterly business or other reviews
  • Capability to influence decision-making and instill credibility in customers, peers, and subordinates through meeting strategic and tactical objectives, deadlines, and budgets
  • Customer Interaction (External): Last mile execution (delivery and related services to customer), related system use, consultative services, sales presentations/part of sales team for local market, procurement interaction, daily distribution of product to the customer
  • Encourage and develop new ideas for procedures and systems to continuously improve the ability of the operational system to promote service to customers
  • Ensure costs are regularly reviewed against agreed budget targets
  • Ensure timely and accurate communication of information which affects service quality
  • Functional knowledge of all modes of transportation including fleet (private and 3PL), parcel, LTL, TL, courier / mid-market, etc.
  • In depth knowledge of transportation and supply chain software: TMS, ERP, FMS systems
  • Leadership, communication, and change management skills. Ability to communicate and persuade at management level
  • Manage and control costs whilst ensuring that operational service standards are continuously met to achieve budgets
  • Manage and create Metrics & KPI's as appropriate
  • Manage and ensure strict compliance of security procedures and regulations
  • Manage, measure, review and take corrective action to ensure that inbound & outbound service quality meets customer requirements and Group standards
  • Optimizes supply chain network across business units by leveraging fixed assets through converting inbound suppliers to collect and generate third party revenue
  • Organize the operational structure, procedures and resources and ensure effective sourcing, induction, training and development of operational staff to optimize the performance of people
  • Proven ability to bring efficiency and scale to a multi-site, multi-business unit environment
  • Serves as safety champion within the facility striving for best in class status while meeting or exceeding safety performance metrics
  • Strong critical thinking, organization, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Travel between all UPMC facilities as required
  • Understanding of regulatory issues (DOT compliance, hazmat, etc.)
  • Work well in a team environment with a shared vision and common goals


  • Bachelors degree required. SCM, business, accounting, or finance preferred Master degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of direct logistics experience is required.  
  • Deep understanding of transportation regulations and governmental policies related to transportation. Deep understanding of warehousing, including optimization.
  • Ability to create and enforce performance standards in an effort to reduce the cost of transportation to the organization.
  • Proven experience managing large organizations with at least 35 employees Strong leadership and teamwork skills required.
  • Demonstrable problem solving and analytical skills required.
  • Ability to manage change in a busy environment required.
  • Computer proficiency of various business software packages preferred.
  • Understands vehicular specifications and fleet planning Demonstrates capability to manage fleet and facility Recognizes and understands methods to improve operational efficiencies Strong communicative, decision making and interpersonal skills are necessary Ability to communicate professionally with various user groups.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts that include days, nights, weekends, holidays and on call rotations to support 24/7 operations, as needed to assess courier operations

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Driver's License DOT Medical Card Clearance Valid CDL driver's license is preferred

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
