UPMC Presbyterian is hiring Nursing students currently enrolled in a Nursing Program for casual nursing support roles for a variety of shifts and days. Casual employees typically work a minimum of 8 hours every two weeks.
Nursing Assistants (NAs) and Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are vital partners in the patient care provided at UPMC. They work on patient care units and perform a variety of important basic and advanced skills. They work closely and continuously with patients, partnering with nurses and other professionals, to make a big difference in how patients recover and experience their hospital stay.
The role you will be selected for will be based upon your previous experience and school semester and clinicals completed. Applicants without previous hospital experience or one semester of clinicals completed in a hospital setting will be provided and are required to successfully complete a training course. ***This course is held over 7 consecutive weekdays during daylight hours.

NON NURSING SCHOOL PROGRAM STUDENTS - Please note that this job opening is for candidates currently enrolled in a Nursing School Program only. The work as an NA or PCT is both challenging and very rewarding. The nursing assistant provides routing patient care and and support services in accordance with established policies and procedures, and as may be directed by the nurse or physician, to assure that the highest degree of quality patient care is maintained at all times. Many find this to be a wonderful way to gain direct patient care experience while still in school.

• Bathing /showering patients, cleaning up soiled patients and beds, walking patients in the room, to the bathroom, and in the hallway.
• Re-positioning patients in bed, assisting them in and out of beds, bedside chairs, and wheelchairs, as well as on and off patient carriers (with assistance as needed).
• Helping patients to walk with canes, walkers, and crutches.
• Preparing patients for meals, feeding patients, filling water pitchers, restocking supplies, and preparing rooms for new admissions.
• Transporting patients, by pushing them in wheelchairs or on carts, to and from tests and other units.
• Assisting with post-life physical care.
• Performing basic clinical skills such as weighing patients, taking blood pressures/pulses/respirations, emptying urine collection bags and measuring the urine, as well as emptying and measuring the fluid from drains.
• Testing blood sugars by finger stick.
• Depending upon the role a PCT may also perform several advanced skills such as drawing blood, performing EKGs (heart monitor tracings), changing simple wound dressings, removing bladder catheters, and removing IV catheters from veins.
• Some units may require clerical and telephone work.
• Performing other duties as assigned.


• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Current enrollment in a Nursing School Program.
• Completed one clinical rotation in a hospital setting preferred.
• Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.


• CPR within 30 days of beginning employment.

Salary Range: $13.64 to $21.41
