At UPMC, our Histotechnicians play an indispensable role in providing the very best care for our patients. We rely on their skills and knowledge to perform accurate laboratory testing which is critical in the diagnosis and treatment of thousands of patient each day. 

UPMC Presbyterian is excited to be hiring a day shift Histotechnician! In this role you would process and prepare various types of tissue samples using a variety of techniques in a clinical laboratory.

  • Analyze problematic and failed results and recommend solutions.
  • Assemble and maintain controls. Record positive control cases.
  • Assess quality of control slides, positive controls and new reagent lots.
  • Cut specialized tissue such as breast core, prostate, transbronchial and bone marrow biopsies, bone tissue, pediatric specimens and frozen tissue.
  • Fix and embed various dermatopathology specimens.
  • Identify and correct problems with Hematoxylin and Eosin and other special stains.
  • Interpret and apply procedures to new situations.
  • Maintain and submit reports.
  • Order and maintain lab supplies.
  • Perform silver impregnation techniques and special stains for rapid diagnosis.


  • High school diploma. 
  • Completion of the educational requirements needed to take the Histotechnician (HT) exam; successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years or an Associates degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry. 
  • 1 year of clinical laboratory experience post-training is preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Histology Technician (HT) certification from ASCP is required within 1 year of hire.
  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • American Society for Clinical Pathology
