Description

Purpose:
Magee Womens Hospital of UPMC

Administers respiratory therapy care and life support to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of cardiopulmonary system, under supervision of physician and by prescription.  The final title and pay will be determined by education, experience, and certifications.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists to transport mechanically ventilated patients.
  • Consults with physician in event of adverse reactions.
  • Demonstrate respiratory care procedures to trainees and other health care personnel.
  • Determine most suitable method of administering inhalants, precautions to be observed, and modifications which may be needed that will be compatible with physician's orders.
  • Inspect and tests respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain patient's chart that contains pertinent identification and therapy information.
  • Monitor patient's physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes.
  • Observe equipment function and adjusts equipment to obtain optimum results to therapy.
  • Operate equipment to ensure specified parameters of treatment, such as volume, gas concentration, humidity, and temperature, and to administer medicinal gases and aerosol drugs to patients.
  • Order repairs when needed.
  • Perform bronchopulmonary drainage and assists patient in performing breathing exercises.
  • Perform pulmonary function tests to be used by physician in diagnosis of case.
  • Read prescription, measures arterial blood gases, and reviews patient information to assess patient condition and determine requirements for treatment, such as type and duration of therapy, and medication dosages.
  • Responds to all code situations.
  • Set up and operates devices, such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators.
  • Supervises students during training.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an AMA approved school for Respiratory Care (AS or BS degree preferred) and is currently Certified/Registry Eligible by the National Board for Respiratory Care. Must hold a current certification in one and two person adult and infant CPR from the AHA or a comparable agency.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
    CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Certified Respiratory Therapist
  • Osteopathic Respiratory Care
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist
  • Respiratory Care Practitioner
