Description

This position assists the Laboratory Supervisor by monitoring the work of technical and ancillary employees. The Lead Medical Technologist assists in test development, gathering data for management reports and regularly performs the duties of a Medical Technologist I including the accurate performance of routine and advanced testing. This position functions as the Laboratory Supervisor during the Supervisor's absence. The Lead Medical Technologist must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to assess and interpret patient data relative to the patient's age.

Responsibilities:
  • ACTS AS A SUPERVISOR DESIGNATE IN THE ABSENCE OF THE SUPERVISOR Assumes supervisory duties as appropriate whenever a supervisor is not present. Completes additional Lead Technologist duties while assigned to a bench such that all duties are completed within the required time frame. These may include scheduling staff, proficiency testing surveys, review of QC/QA documentation, preparation of QA reports, writing new procedures and other duties as assigned. Evaluates problems in the absence of the Supervisor and solves those that are possible. Communicates problems with the Laboratory Directors as appropriate. Participates in an extensive administrative call rotation with the other supervisory staff (only for Tissue Typing Laboratory).
  • COMPETENCY ASSESSMENT Assists supervisory personnel in the observation and documentation of laboratory staff competency.
  • KNOWLEDGE OF INFORMATION AND COMPUTER SERVICES Displays working knowledge of all required computer functions and systems. Can retrieve patient information and testing results from various systems. Evaluates and processes specimens according to department procedures. Analyzes all specimens according to established procedure. Record and report test results according to procedural guidelines. Informs supervisory personnel and/or pathologist of any unusual or problematic incidents
  • PURCHASING AND INVENTORY Demonstrates awareness of appropriate inventory levels in all sections of the laboratory. Handles purchasing in the absence of the Supervisor.
  • QC, PREVENTATIVE AND UNSCHEDULED MAINTENANCE Instrument maintenance and/or function checks are performed and documented accurately, according to procedure. Troubleshoots instrument malfunctions and informs Supervisor or pathologist of problems. Reviews QC lags. Errors, omissions and discrepancies are brought to the attention of the Supervisor or pathologist.
  • SERVES AS A ROLE MODEL FOR SUBORDINATE EMPLOYEES AND ADHERES TO ALL POLICIES Maintains confidentiality regarding patient, hospital and laboratory business. Adheres to abnormal and/or critical results reporting policy and turn-around-time policy. Participates in and monitors quality assurance indicators. Adheres to personal appearance standards and displays hospital ID badge. Telephone privileges are followed according to policy. Complies with attendance and tardiness policy. Helps to monitor subordinate attendance and tardiness. Adheres to the compliance policy and serves as a resource for subordinate questions. Adheres to all safety policies as outlined in the Laboratory Safety Manual.
  • TRAINING, DEVELOPMENT, AND CONTINUING EDUCATION New procedures are mastered within established time frames. Demonstrates awareness of changes in procedures and protocols. Attends all mandatory sessions regarding safety and compliance. Attends in-services, lectures and training classes. Performs orientation and training assignments in an organized, thorough manner. Serves as a resource by sharing knowledge of procedure when consulted. Develops, performs and/or evaluates special projects. Performs test evaluation of new procedures and/or reagent systems. Formulates and/or revise procedures according NCCLS guidelines.

Qualifications

BS degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program AND certification as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) within two years from hire date, OR BS degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND categorical certification for the specific specialty by the ASCP, OR BS degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years of experience in a role equivalent to that of a medical laboratory technician in a clinical laboratory, OR Successfully completed the HEW (HHS) proficiency examination, AND Three years experience as a Medical Technologist.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
ASCP certification in medical technology or ASCP categorical certification preferred. Certification as a Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics(ABHI) (only for the Tissue Typing Laboratory).
