UPMC Jameson is currently hiring a Full Time Clinician for the Emergency Department at our New Castle, PA location. UPMC Jameson offers Level II Emergency Services. The Emergency Department is operational twenty-four (24/7) hours daily, with medical coverage provided by Emergency Department Physicians, Physician Assistants, and Nurse Practitioners. Our Emergency Department has 30 private rooms, with 3 psychiatric rooms and provides care for illnesses and injuries ranging from minor to life threatening. We provide care to patients ranging in age from neonatal to geriatric. The provision of care involves nursing triage, assessment, medical evaluation, ordering of appropriate diagnostic testing, assessment of response to treatments and medications, diagnosis of conditions, and provision of discharge instructions or arrangement of admission to the hospital. All levels of staff must successfully complete a BLS course. Our RN's must successfully complete an ACLS, PALS and NR course.


This position will work afternoons/evenings, 1pm - 11:30pm. One weekend per schedule is required.


Clinicians work in collaboration with their Unit Director, management, and other caregivers to coordinate clinical activities for each shift, develop and educate staff on the unit, and improve the nursing process. Clinicians inspire superior performance on their unit through example, not only by exhibiting their own expertise in patient care assignments, but also by providing ongoing consultation and education for their team, including in-service demonstrations of new devices, equipment, and policy changes.

  • Applies nursing knowledge and skills within the framework of Relationship Based Care, using the nursing process to meet the clinical, psychosocial and spiritual needs of the patient and family. Practices solid verbal and written communication skills, and is able to articulate and translate the patient's condition to other care providers and to negotiate and make recommendations for changes in patient care and unit practices. Patient documentation is comprehensive and promotes communication between caregivers. Demonstrates critical thinking in the analysis of clinical, social, safety, psychological and spiritual issues for the patient care within an episode of care. Incorporates national professional organization as well as business unit and health system's goals to improve patient safety, quality and satisfaction of the patient experience in daily work. Creates a caring and compassionate patient focused experience by building healing relationships with patients, families and colleagues. Disseminates new knowledge and innovations through presentations, posters, and publications.
  • Demonstrates interest in the development of others and positively impacts the lives of patients/families, peers, and members of the healthcare team through mentoring, education, and knowledge sharing. Actively participates in the role of preceptor for student nurses, nurse interns, graduate and experienced nurses and assists with the development of new preceptors in their role. Mentors and role models quest for continuous learning through formal education and the development of others. Seeks opportunities to share expertise with other members of the healthcare team within and beyond the clinical unit/department.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of performance improvement tools and techniques. Continuously improves the quality of care and the work environment of outcomes and the integration of research and best practices into daily work. Shares learning from improvements with other units and/or spreads across the business unit or system.
  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by building teams and relationships through mentoring and modeling uplifting and positive communication. Coaches colleagues on cultural diversity and addresses workplace horizontal violence and impairment. Demonstrates accountability to self and others for safe work hours, time management and healthy lifestyles.
  • Knowledge of specialized care and documentation skills appropriate to specific ED patients (e.g. thrombolytics, animal bites, MVAs, hunting accidents, chest pain, STEMI patients, and obstetrical patients, etc.).
  • Serves as a leader in clinical nursing practice, identifying patient and staff focused opportunities for improvement and leading the change process. Identifies, educates and supports the psychological and learning needs of staff during change and transition. Practices participatory leadership and is an active member of shared leadership at the unit, facility or system level. Assumes formal leadership responsibilities for one or more of the following: quality improvement, evidence based practice, GN or new hire on-boarding. Assists the Unit/Department Leader with the peer review process.


Minimum 3 years experience.

BSN required/MSN or CNL preferred.

Demonstrated competence as a Professional Staff Nurse.
Emergency Department experience preferred. May consider telemetry/critical care experience.


Must be able to demonstrate:


Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.
Knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span.
Ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.
Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical, and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.
Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise, and to lead others in application of, the nursing process.
Mobility and visual manual dexterity.
Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support
  • Basic Life Support
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Certified Pediatric Advanced Life Support
  • Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse.
  • National Certification preferred.
