ANCC Magnet designated UPMC Passavant is hiring full-time Patient Care Technicians to support various inpatient units at our McCandless location. Hours vary by unit, but full-time candidates can expect to work between 36 to 40 hours per week.  These positions will also require working a rotating schedule that includes weekends and holidays.

Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are vital partners in the patient care provided at UPMC. They work on patient care units and perform a variety of important basic and advanced skills. They work closely and continuously with patients, partnering with nurses and other professionals, to make a big difference in how patients recover and experience their hospital stay.

The role you will be selected for will be based upon your previous experience. Applicants without previous hospital experience who are hired will be provided--and are required to successfully complete--a training course.

The work of a PCT is both challenging and very rewarding. The PCT provides routine patient care and support services in accordance with established policies and procedures, and may be directed by the nurse or physician, to assure that the highest degree of quality patient care is maintained at all times.

Responsibilities:
  • Bathing/showering patients, cleaning up soiled patients and beds, walking patients in the room, to the bathroom, and in the hallway.
  • Re-positioning patients in bed, assisting them in and out of beds, bedside chairs, and wheelchairs, as well as on and off patient carriers (with assistance as needed).
  • Helping patients to walk with canes, walkers, and crutches.
  • Preparing patients for meals, feeding patients, filling water pitchers, restocking supplies, and preparing rooms for new admissions.
  • Transporting patients, by pushing them in wheelchairs or on carts, to and from tests and other units.
  • Assisting with post-life physical care.
  • Performing basic clinical skills such as weighing patients, taking blood pressures/pulses/respirations, emptying urine collection bags and measuring the urine, as well as emptying and measuring the fluid from drains.
  • Testing blood sugars by finger stick.
  • Depending upon the role, a PCT may also perform several advanced skills such as drawing blood, performing EKGs (heart monitor tracings), changing simple wound dressings, removing bladder catheters, and removing IV catheters from veins.
  • Some units may require clerical and telephone work.
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.
Which role you will be selected for will be based upon your previous experience. Applicants without previous experience who are hired will be provided, and are required to successfully complete a training course.

If no previous hospital or pre-hospital training, successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant training program or Nursing Student that has completed one Clinical Rotation.
 
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation within 30 days of employment
  • Additional clearances may be required based upon the unit a candidate is hired into
