Description

The Senior Business Analyst position will be part of the Quality Analytics and Performance team at the Wolff Center. The Wolff Center is UPMC’s corporate quality group that supports systemwide quality performance improvement and analytics. This position will support both hospital and physician quality programs. We are looking for an analyst that is comfortable understanding government and other quality program methodology, utilizing large data sets to determine performance across quality metrics, and determining the financial impact of quality performance.


Responsibilities:
  • Act as a mentor for less senior Business Analysts and administrative staff.
  • Analyze complex clinical / financial data and extract and define relevant information; interpret data for the purpose of determining past clinical / financial performance, and/or to project a future activity.
  • Develop varied clinical / financial reports and/or graphs of clinical / financial patient data for the purpose of quality, trending, and results analysis.
  • Identify trends in patient outcomes, utilization, medical quality, and other areas.
  • Implement and monitor effectiveness of these solutions.
  • Interpret clinical / financial data and events for Senior Management who must make clinical quality or business decisions.
  • Investigate variances and derive solutions to variant outcomes results and quality issues.
  • Manage special projects.
  • Meet deadlines and turnaround times set by managers and department director (these deadlines and turnaround times will, at times, require the employee to work until the project is completed, meaning extended daily work hours, extended work weeks, or both).
  • Monitor UPMC Hospital operating performance against regional, national & international benchmarks.
  • Perform complex, detailed statistical, cost, and clinical / financial analyses, and then explain this analysis to a non-technical audience of both internal and external customers and, at times, senior management.
  • Periodically perform cost/benefit analysis.
  • Plan and conduct complex data retrieval techniques and analytical studies to determine trends, profitability, statistical relevance, or costs of business or clinical / financial activities.
  • Recommend budget changes to clinical operating procedures based upon statistical findings, and advise Senior Management of observed trends or statistical evidence observed in this clinical / financial data.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in business, mathematics, statistics, health care, management or a related field is required.
  • Masters degree preferred.
  • Five years experience in financial and/or medical analysis is required Or Successful Completion of the FMR Program.
  • Experience in health care industry preferred, but those with relevant experience in other industries will be considered.
  • Superior computer skills are a given, with expert knowledge in Access, Excel, and other financial & statistical software packages. Familiarity to Medipac, Data Warehousing and COGNOS experience would be particularly advantageous. 
  • Person must demonstrate a high degree of professionalism, enthusiasm and initiative on a daily basis. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment a must.
  • Will need to manage multiple tasks and projects, and forge strong interpersonal relationships within the department, with other departments, and with external audiences.
  • Attention to detail is critical to the success of this position, with demonstrated competency in customer orientation and the ability to deal with ambiguity. Excellent planning, communication, documentation, organizational, analytical, and problem solving abilities.
  • Advanced mathematical skills. Ability to interpret and summarize results of various analyses in a timely and meaningful way. Ability to effectively approach problem solving.
  • Ability to re-engineer processes to positively impact productivity in terms of timeliness and accuracy. Ability to analyze financial & clinical results and to comprehend forecasting models. Well-informed and conversant with general business, economic, and clinical matters.
