Purpose:

Provides bedside behavior change support to patients admitted to UPMC hospitals. Works with patients who are tobacco users, or former tobacco users, to modify their lifestyle risks as it relates to their tobacco use and treatment being offered and provided through UPMC.

Responsibilities:
  • Accurately document patient interactions in agreement with team standards and goals.
  • Actively maintain awareness of and competence in interventions for tobacco use, improving compliance to medication and/or medical regimens, and others as indicated.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of UPMC/community health resources and work collaboratively with interdepartmental and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Participate as necessary in clinical research trials and quality improvement initiatives run through the Tobacco Treatment Service, including planning, writing, recruiting, data collection and analysis.
  • Participate in health promotion activities for UPMC staff, patients, and community members.
  • Provide specialty core expertise in tobacco use disorder and treatment.
  • Serve as a team lead, which includes acting as a mentor to new team members and existing staff, providing feedback to Manager related to performance management, and assisting in the development of new programs/policies/procedures.
  • Use a masterly level of skills to deliver tobacco cessation interventions, including the assessing patients readiness, using motivational interviewing strategies to explore motivation for change and enhancing readiness, as well as providing appropriate medication recommendations and community referrals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in psychology, health education, nutrition, exercise physiology, counseling, social work, public health or a related field required. 
  • Masters degree preferred. 
  • Two to three years of health coach-related experience required. 
  • Lead Health Coach Specialist are able to demonstrate core skills at the mastery level in the proficiency of delivering tobacco cessation counseling and pharmacotherapy recommendations as measured by standard clinical quality assurance review criteria. 
  • Health Coach Is would demonstrate core skills at the mastery level by completing the advanced training course for Motivational Interviewing, achieving inpatient counseling goals for one year, and the ability to train new staff as supervised by the Tobacco Treatment Service Medical Directors.  
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn a client-centered counseling approach that emphasizes nonjudgmental empathic interaction and collaborative development and implementation of behavior change plans- emphasis on motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral techniques. 
  • Nonsmoker Detail-oriented individual with excellent organizational skills. High level of oral communication skills Intermediate proficiency with MS Word and Outlook and ability to learn new computer-based documentation skills.

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
