Purpose:

 

UPMC Presbyterian Hospital is a tertiary care, academic facility that is part of the UPMC network and provides care to patients with a wide variety of cardiac pathologies and offers advanced treatments such as transplant/LVAD and TAVR.  The echocardiography laboratory is IAC accredited and has state of the art ultrasound systems, reading stations and reporting program.  The laboratory offers advanced transthoracic echocardiography with strain and microbubble contrast.  All modalities of stress echo are performed including, treadmill, dobutamine and bicycle.  Transesophageal echo routinely uses 3D imaging and is a high-volume diagnostic technique that is also frequently used to assist in structural heart interventions.  The lab will be moving into a new expanded space in 2018.  There are 10 staff sonographers, 2 full time nurses and a full time academic physician staff.  CME support is provided.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and oversee sonographer scheduling and performance quality.
  • Stay current with transthoracic and stress scanning skills and perform these studies routinely.
  • Maintain personal registry status
  • Coordinate with staff, efficient patient workflow and timely reporting.
  • Serve as a liaison between the staff and the medical director for staff education and quality.
  • Serve as a liaison with the hospital administration for hospital policies, equipment needs and patient satisfaction.
  • Assist with maintaining IAC accreditation.
  • Supervise the training of new sonographer staff and cardiology fellows either directly or by delegating this appropriately to other staff.
  • Recommend engagement with the American Society of Echocardiography.

Qualifications

Combination of work, supervisory experience and/or education in adult echocardiography, totaling 5 years, is preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Registered as a specialist in adult echocardiography by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or by Cardiology Credentialing International required.
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonogram or Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
