Description

Purpose: 

UPMC Presbyterian Hospital is a tertiary care, academic facility that is part of the UPMC network and provides care to patients with a wide variety of cardiac pathologies and offers advanced treatments such as transplant/LVAD and TAVR.  The echocardiography laboratory is IAC accredited and has state of the art ultrasound systems, reading stations and reporting program.  The laboratory offers advanced transthoracic echocardiography with strain and microbubble contrast.  All modalities of stress echo are performed including, treadmill, dobutamine and bicycle.  Transesophageal echo routinely uses 3D imaging and is a high-volume diagnostic technique that is also frequently used to assist in structural heart interventions.  The lab will be moving into a new expanded space in 2018.  There a Lead sonographer, 10 staff sonographers, 2 full time nurses and a full time academic physician staff.  CME support is provided.

 
Responsibilities:
  • Maintain and demonstrate a positive attitude as characterized by caring, concern and support for patients, visitors, medical staff and coworkers.
  • Stay current with evolving transthoracic scanning skills.  Ensure complete study protocol with acceptable quality.   
  • Accountable for timely performance of echocardiograms. In an 8 hour shift 6-8 studies. In a 10 hour shift 8-10 studies. 
  • As part of a team approach, participate in accomplishing efficient patient workflow for outpatients, inpatients, including portable studies and STAT requests.
  • Responsible for the appropriate use of saline and microbubble contrast agents. 
  • Provide the reading cardiologists with a preliminary analysis of the echocardiogram.
  • Recognition of life threatening pathology to facilitate prompt reporting of these abnormalities by the cardiologist.
  • Assist with the training of new sonographer staff and cardiology fellows as directed by the Lead Sonographer. 
  • Ability to work independently using interpersonal, organizational, communication, and problem solving skills. 
  • Participate in laboratory quality assurance for maintaining IAC accreditation. 

Qualifications

  • Requires completion of an accredited Sonographer program.
  • Must be registered or registry eligible as a specialist in adult echocardiography by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
  • Registered adult cardiac sonographer is preferred 
  • Experience required in M-mode, two-dimensional echocardiograms; color flow, pulsed and continuous wave echocardiography necessary.   
  • Current Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) preferred


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
