Purpose:

University of Pittsburgh Physicians is currently hiring for a regular Full Time OP Nurse Coordinator I (RN) to support the Heart & Vascular Institute's (HVI) Cardiac Surgery research team.

This position will work a regular Monday through Friday variable daylight schedule.

The Research Coordinator manages trials for multiple cardiac surgeons, cath lab, and cardiac imaging doctors. The position also works in conjunction with the Research Coordinators at UPMC Presbyterian, acting as a back-up and blinded study coordinator for participant follow-ups.

Our Cardiac Surgery research department has over 20 active studies. Of the over 20 studies in various stages of enrollment/follow-up; a number of these trials are IDE/IND studies. 

Responsibilities:
  • Complete all required clinical and pre-clinical research certifications (Research Practice Fundamentals) in accordance with Health Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
  • Perform duties for research projects according to defined protocols and procedures including, but not limited to:  
    • Establish and maintain communication with study sponsor and investigators. 
    • Prepare and submit all regulatory documents for UPMC/University of Pittsburgh legal/regulatory review and approval. 
    • Obtain informed consent from patients to participate in research studies at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Occasional travel to satellite offices (UPMC Passavant, Shadyside, Mercy, and University Center) to enroll patients and conduct research activities is required.  
    • Prepare/submit, modify, and renew University of Pittsburgh/central IRB approval for protocols and consent forms. 
    • Prepare/submit, modify, and renew IACUC and EH& S approval for pre-clinical study protocols. 
    •  Assist with study coordination of pre-clinical studies
  • Ensures adherence to ethical practices during the conduct of research in order to protect the rights and well-being of patients and the collection of quality data.
  • Maintains own caseload of studies; Process all required study documents through Risk Management (OSPARS), Institutional Review Boards, etc. Maintains each study's regulatory files; maintains accurate research records internally; assists with budget negotiations, fiscal review
  • Maintains records of all studies supplies (device and/or drug accountability logs, equipment, lab supplies, etc.) 
  • Actively screens and recruits potential participants for trials. Uses a variety of resources and strategies to manage the care of patients participating in research, ensuring compliance with protocol procedures, assessments and reporting requirements as well as management of symptoms
  • Reviews laboratory and procedure results, communicates results with MDs/patients
  • Completes case report forms/data collection forms, and electronic data entry
  • Utilizes multiple communication methods to facilitate the effective conduct of research (with physicians, ancillary staff, study Sponsors, etc.); attends monthly research meetings; provides educational in-services for clinical staff
  • Communicates routinely with patients, including education on protocol requirements and disease processes; schedules procedures, tests and clinic visits 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years nursing experience 
  • BSN preferred
  • Cardiology, Acute Care, and/or Critical Care (ICU/CCU) experience preferred
  • Research experience preferred
  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below. They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patients status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.  

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse. CPR Certification UPMC approved national certification preferred. CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Registered Nurse
