Purpose:
Under the direction of the Lead, Clinical Counselor for Student Athletes the position will provide consulting and outreach services to University of Pittsburgh coaches, athletic trainers, and other administrative personnel regarding the psychological well-being of individual student athletes and team members. This position requires oversight of evaluations, treatment planning, and progress monitoring and possible referrals; including but not limited to delivery of substance abuse education and treatment for disordered eating.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), or Licensed Marriage Family Therapist (LMFT) is required. 

Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate Student Athlete Support group to monitor and problem solve student athlete issues.
  • Develop and execute institutional policies and procedures.
  • Identify psychological education outreach needs and offer relevant programming in collaboration with the Life Skills program.
  • Maintain extensive contact with student athletes, parents and physicians.
  • Participate in weekly case management, staff meetings, as well as attend interdisciplinary conferences.
  • Perform special functions for the department as requested.
  • Provide services across all sports and participate in orientation by introducing counseling and sport psychology services and how to access these services.
  • Provide staff training if applicable.
  • Work in conjunction with team physician with utilization of mental health screening annually for all student athletes.
  • Work with members of the Athletic Department, team physicians, WPIC, the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and other members of the University community to include Title IX coordinator, Campus police, Student Health and University Counseling Center.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Education in School Counseling, or related field required. 
  • Two (2) years of college age population experience with expertise in one or more of the following areas: substance abuse and alcohol education, stress management, depression, anxiety, grief, identity crisis and psychological issues related to the injury and rehabilitation in competitive athletics required. 
  • Prior experience working with student-athlete populations in a Division I athletic department preferred. 
  • Knowledge of psychotherapy and clinical/counseling psychology, as well as application of current version of the DSM. 
  • Knowledge of sport psychology and performance enhancement.
  • Knowledge of rules governing the ACC and NCAA, to include adherence to professional, legal ethical and professional standards endorsed by licensing professional organization. 
  • Ensure all assigned tasks comply with University, ACC and NCAA rules.
  • Knowledge of academic and psychological testing standards and principles. 
  • Commitment to diversity and demonstrated competency in multicultural counseling skills.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Marriage Family Therapist (LMFT) is required. 
  • Training in alcohol and drug use preferred. 
  • Training in sport psychology, such as Association for Applied Sport Psychology preferred.
  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
