Description

UPMC is looking for security professionals to help support our mission of Quality & Safety for patients, visitors, and fellow employees.

Purpose:

Maintain a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, staff and all UPMC owned and adjacent properties. Enforce UPMC rules and regulations to both employees and the public. Patrol UPMC hospitals, buildings, grounds and associated areas to prevent, investigate, and document arson, theft and vandalism and any other criminal activity. Monitor security, fire, and environmental alarms. Assist in follow-up as necessary. Respond to and resolve problems, dispute and unusual circumstances as necessary.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist with traffic control as necessary.
  • Completion of reports and incident documentation as necessary.
  • Control evidence, valuables, lost/found as necessary.
  • Deal with a high volume of security incident reports, including reports of high complexity, on a regular basis.
  • Deal with patients who are victims of violence such as gunshot wounds stabbings, physical assault, etc., and the aftermath of follow-up violence that can occur in the hospital.
  • Handle calls for security assistance in an appropriate manner, requiring a strong skill set in crisis management and de-escalation techniques.
  • Handle disruptive visitors, patients, and staff by verbal communication, physical intervention and/or arrests as necessary.
  • Handle evidence that will be used in criminal proceedings appropriately. Appropriately handle a high volume of evidence where the chain of custody has to be well documented and preserved, including bullet fragments, rape kits, blood clothes, drugs, weapons, etc.
  • Inspect incoming/outgoing parcels as necessary to prevent theft of hospital property. Check permission slips to remove discarded material from UPMC property.
  • Investigate incidents of unusual circumstances reported by UPMC staff, visitors, physicians and patients.
  • Maintain security and safety of UPMC buildings, persons, property, and assets.
  • Operate UPMC vehicles in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code and maintain any issued equipment.
  • Prepare and complete all mandatory training programs as per departmental guidelines.
  • Provide protection and enforcement of local laws, UPMC policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Regularly respond appropriately when weapons are detected by the Metal detector in the Presby ED.
  • Release bodies from the Morgue and enter information into Remains Tracker software. As the last line of defense, make sure the correct body is released to the correct funeral home.
  • Respond appropriately to heightened levels of security required as the designated receiving Hospital for US Government officials and other dignitaries.
  • Respond to incoming air ambulances and assist with offloading trauma patients and medical equipment, escort flight crew and patient from Helipad to Presby ED, perform fire suppression detail on the heliport, and undergo annual Helicopter Safety training conducted by Stat Medevac.
  • Serve as a member of the fire response team and responds to various security-related alarms. Respond to emergency calls for assistance, and disasters.
  • Testify in legal proceedings as required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 
  • Associates degree in Criminal Justice preferred. 
  • One year experience in safety, security, law enforcement or related field preferred. 
  • Excellent customer service skills required to handle all levels of personnel, patients, and visitors. 
  • High level of integrity required for handling sensitive/confidential UPMC information. 
  • Ability to defuse and handle distraught or hostile person(s) in a professional manner required. 
  • Good oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. 
  • Good interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to deal with stress and potentially dangerous conflict situations. 
  • Available for all shifts. 
  • Guards/Officers are required to wear a bullet proof vest

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 235 with Firearms or Act 235 without Firearms
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Driver's License
  • UPMC Physical Fitness Standard
  • PA Act 120 (Municipal Police Officers Training Act) preferred.
