Description

The UPMC Center for Advanced Robotics Training (CART) features proctorship and mentorship for surgeons seeking to enhance their skills in robotic surgery. The Division of Surgical Oncology focuses on clinical research in surgical education, robotic surgery, pancreas cancer, hepatobiliary surgery, and other related GI oncologic or surgical issues.

This position is for a Research Associate involved in robotic surgical education of surgical residents, fellows, and attending surgeons. This position will involve contact with surgeons at our institution as well as hospitals participating in robotic training. The successful candidate will be responsible for disseminating surgical curriculum to participating surgeons, collecting data, reviewing and editing videos, follow-up with study sites, collecting, entering and verifying metrics, assisting in quality control procedures and general research assistance.

The data and outcomes are very straight-forward and easy to understand; however, intense organization and database entry, mathematics, video editing, and merging databases are required. There are multiple files to manipulate and a keen sense of organization and seamless management of PC and Mac systems are needed.

Purpose:

Assist in the execution of research protocols and services.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist in data collection and data entry and quality control of data.
  • Conduct interviews with research participants under supervision as needed.
  • Conduct on-line and/or library searches as needed by the PI as necessary.
  • Conduct subject searches to locate subjects who are unable to be contacted.
  • Contact and schedule potential participants from a designated pool of individuals who have agreed to be contacted for research studies.
  • Edit videos that have been recorded of surgical fellows performing drills to focus on key points of the procedures
  • Explain research protocol and obtain informed consent from participants.
  • Follow appropriate research policies and procedures including all applicable laws and regulations and maintains scientific integrity including accurate data storage.
  • Maintain and update subject information database.
  • Maintain inventory of surgical biotissue as well as needed disposables, including timely ordering and receipt of required supplies, proper storage of supplies and shipment of supplies to off-site hospitals systems.
  • Perform duties according to defined protocols and procedures including appropriate collection, recording, and storage of data
  • Perform phone interviews for research project protocol(s) as needed.
  • Prepare surgical biotissue drills to be sent to offsite for testing of surgical fellows.
  • Prepare training documents on all new skills acquired
  • Process and review research data collected at multi-hospital locations.
  • Review curriculum with sites, surgical fellows and Intuitive Representatives
  • Upload videos (training and edited/reviewed videos) and curriculum onto a web-based curriculum delivery system.
  • Weekly reporting of duties with goals for following week and adequate time management

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree or current enrollment in a related Bachelors Degree program with direct experience in a research environment required.
  • Familiarity with computers and common software packages required 
  • Prior related work experience in a research setting preferred 
  • Working knowledge of research methodology strongly preferred
Preferred:
  • Advanced degree
  • Video editing experience
  • Adobe Creative Cloud experience
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
