The Oncology Outcomes Specialist performs all cancer registry-related follow-up functions for the UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside Cancer Registry. This position interacts effectively, courteously and tactfully with physicians, patients and other health care professionals in a way that promotes accurate and timely follow-up. The Specialist performs daily, monthly, quarterly and yearly follow-up operations in accordance with UPMC Network Registry policies and procedures, the published guidelines and requirements of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS), Pennsylvania Department of Health, and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO).  This role works to maintain a 90% follow-up rate for all analytic patients diagnosed within the last five years and an 80% follow-up rate for all analytic patients from the registry reference date.

This position is located in Shadyside, but will have the opportunity to work from home after training is complete.  The schedule for this role is Monday through Friday during daylight hours.

Responsibilities:
  • Patients must be followed on a yearly basis by performing basic follow-up procedures on patients due for follow-up each month to assure a complete and accurate database.
  • Assist the manager in coordinating activities and performs all follow-up duties and related activities according to established policies, procedures, national and Commonwealth regulations and works to maintain a follow up success rate of at least 90% for cases abstracted in a five year timeframe and 80% for entire database.
  • Compare the Social Security Death Index to cancer registry database periodically and updates the database as necessary.
  • Patient that are lost must be investigated to obtain vital and disease status.
  • Perform other functions and tasks required to maintain a current and accurate database and stay in compliance with the requirements of UPMC, American College of Surgeons (ACoS), Pennsylvania Department of Health, and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO).
  • Print pathology reports weekly and reviews monthly by the Oncology Outcomes Specialist to ensure accurate and complete casefinding.
  • Review MARS mortality reports and radiation reports on a weekly bases and updates the follow-up database as necessary.
  • Review the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry Mortality Listing annually and updates the follow-up database accordingly to assure accurate vital and disease status.
  • Run monthly follow up reports to assure compliance and reviews strategies with manager to assure standards are met.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma and one year oncology or abstracting experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Proficient in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, abstracting techniques, AJCC and SEER summary staging systems, ICD-10-CM, and/or other clinical coding systems. 
  • Experience with hospital data systems, Microsoft Office software products and personal computers. 
  • Accurate and efficient keyboarding skills necessary to meet productivity standards. 
  • Associates or bachelors degree in Health Information Management preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) preferred. Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) preferred.
