Description

UPMC is looking for security professionals to help support our mission of Quality & Safety for patients, visitors, and fellow employees. UPMC East's Safety and Security Department is hiring a Security Officer to fill rotating shifts.

Purpose:

Maintain a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, staff and all UPMC owned and adjacent properties. Enforce UPMC rules and regulations to both employees and the public. Patrol UPMC hospitals, buildings, grounds and associated areas to prevent, investigate, and document arson, theft and vandalism and any other criminal activity. Monitor security, fire, and environmental alarms. Assist in follow-up as necessary. Respond to and resolve problems, dispute and unusual circumstances as necessary.

Responsibilities:
  • Acts in a manner that supports the UPMC East four core values of quality & safety, care & compassion, dignity & respect, and community.
  • As requested or upon direct observation, intervene when there is a potential for physical harm or harassment to patients, visitors or staff in a manner that causes minimal harm.
  • Assist patients/visitors entering the facility.
  • Conduct lock/unlock detail as directed.
  • Conduct routine rounds of hospital property for purposes of determining potential safety or security hazards.
  • Enforce Hospital policies such as nametag and equipment removal policy.
  • Escort patients, visitors and staff as requested.
  • Handle valuables as assigned in a manner consistent with departmental policy to ensure their security.
  • Participate in investigations as requested.
  • Perform traffic and parking control duties as assigned.
  • Prepare incident reports and shift reports to ensure that adequate information is available for follow-up investigations and pass on to other officers.
  • Respond to Emergency Management codes, as well as 5444 and 5666 codes.
  • Transport deceased patients to morgue and release to funeral director/coroner.
  • Upon determining that such potential exists, reports the situation and implements corrective action.

Qualifications

  • Two years of college class work in Administration of Justice or Criminology; OR
  • Equivalent combination of education and work experience in safety and security in a health care facility preferred. 
  • Guards/Officers are required to wear a bullet proof vest

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Act 235 with Firearms or Act 235 without Firearms
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Driver's License
  • UPMC Physical Fitness Standard
