Purpose:
The Specialist Ophthalmic Support Technician is an integral part of the Ophthalmology team providing specialized visual testing for patients. The Specialist Ophthalmic technician works under medical supervision to facilitate effective testing of patients including Electrophysiology (ERG, EOG, VEP) or Ultrasonography ( Bscan, UBM, Doppler B scan , Ascan,) or OCT.

Responsibilities:
  • Ability to problem-solve and prioritize workload to ensure smooth and efficient daily operation. Able to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast paced out patient setting. Must have a good working knowledge of ophthalmology and visual testing to assist physicians and respond to patient questions.
  • Coordinates the day to day interaction of the Visual Testing Service with other health care departments. Makes sure that scheduling requests are dealt with promptly and that all necessary billing functions are carried out in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates the principles of �Service Excellence� while maintaining a positive attitude and conforming to the Visual Testing Standards of Performance on service excellence.
  • Ensures adequate staffing by proactively monitoring daily templates and time off requests.
  • In the absence of the nurses is responsible to administer topical eye drops in accordance with physician�s written orders.
  • Maintains open communications with faculty, staff, referring physicians and their staff as well as all hospital and physicians office personnel as indicated.
  • Performs , when needed Automated Humphrey Visual Fields, Goldman Visual Fields, Visual Acuity, and Color Testing
  • Performs duties centered on either electrophysiology, or ultrasonography or OCT but not exclusively.
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies / behaviors.
  • Responsible for calibration of specialist equipment
  • Responsible for developing protocols for testing
  • Responsible for maintaining laboratory or clinical space to a high standard
  • Responsible for ordering and maintaining all supplies necessary for operations in the visual testing department. Works towards quality assurance while containing costs.
  • Responsible for the training of all new and current staff on all current equipment as well as new technologies as they become available. Also assists the department in researching and cost comparing new equipment for capital budget purposes. In addition assists in the training of new residents and fellows each year.
  • Responsible to ensure that all equipment is in working order and is up to date on all preventative maintenance and compliant with all regulatory agencies.
  • Responsible to ensure the quality of the test results being provided. Tracks and monitors staff progress and reports any concerns or issues to the operations manager immediately.
  • Works as a liaison between the testing department and the physician services to ensure a seamless flow as well as ensuring the quality of all tests performed. Meets regularly to discuss any issues or concerns.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years experience working in an Ophthalmic Setting with an emphasis on visual field testing.
  • Successful completion of the AAO Home Study Course is preferred.
  • Experience working in an outpatient setting is desirable but not mandatory. Must have a working knowledge of ophthalmic terminology and be able to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast paced outpatient facility.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
