UPMC Shadyside is excited to be hiring a full-time Specialty Laboratory Technologist! This role would be scheduled primarily daylight shift Monday through Friday, with weekends, evenings, nights, and holidays as needed. This role would also have rotating on-call responsibilities. 

In this role you would provide authority, responsibility and accountability for the accurate performance of laboratory testing of an advanced nature. These tests are used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients and in the evaluation of a patient's response to treatment. Apply competent clinical knowledge to achieve accurate clinical testing which leads to quality patient care outcomes and develops and perform clinical procedures using highly sophisticated techniques and advanced instrumentation.

You would perform the manipulation, freezing and storage of hematopoietic progenitor cell products for patients in the Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Unit and processing and testing for contract services.  This Specialist II position requires proficient experience in , but not limited to, stat hematology, ABO/Rh and flow cytometry testing and analysis, manufacture of cellular products using aseptic technique, utilization of high complexity manufacturing techniques and equipment for hematopoietic stem cell selection protocols, reagent manufacture, quality control testing and maintenance QC of records, inventory and ordering of all necessary supplies, equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, development and implementation of new testing and manufacturing procedures, high complexity calculations, and maintenance of patient, reagent and equipment records.  Direct patient contact is involved at collection of products and with the performance of bedside thaw and infusion of products. Will communicate with physicians, nurse coordinators, and principal investigators results of testing and processing, and will appropriately report any deviations. Requires standby on-call on a rotational basis. Comply with all regulations governing the collection, processing, storage and infusion of hematopoietic progenitor cell products.


Responsibilities:
  • Creates and maintains a customer-oriented and service excellence environment.

  • Utilizes independent judgment and discretion in the conduct of activities.
  • Assures aseptic techniques. 
  • Processes autologous and allogeneic progenitor cell products according to procedure
  • Maintains and operates specialized automated equipment.
  • Prepares reagents according to strict guidelines.
  • Performs calculations that determine critical patient indices
  • Performs required testing on hematopoietic progenitor cell products.
  • Requires standby on-call on a rotational basis.
  • Follows procedures for sample acceptance, patient identification and confidentiality
  • Ensures that all records relevant to a patient’s product is contained within the HSCLab Patient folder
  • Maintains accurate and current records in the computer for the following:
    • Hematopoietic progenitor cell product storage locations in the LN2 vessels.
    • All computed flow cytometry results for hematopoietic progenitor cell products, to include pre and post manipulation results, storage, and transplantation data.
  • Maintains the laboratory in a clean, orderly manner.
  • Ensures the security of the laboratory and LN2 vessel storage room
  • Stocks reagents, supplies and equipment for manual and automated post-harvest manipulation, freezing and transplantation of hematopoietic progenitor cell products. 
  • Performs regularly scheduled laboratory and reagent QC as specified in HSCLab manuals.
  • Performs periodic quality control tests on all automated equipment as specified in the HSCLab procedure manual. 
  • Compiles QC for review by Laboratory Supervisor.
  • Notifies Laboratory Supervisor and/or Laboratory Director of equipment failure and when quality control criteria exceed established limits.
  • Identify major problems if they arise during processing; notify Laboratory Supervisor and/or Laboratory Director and Medical Director for consultation and instruction.
  • Attends weekly HSCLab meetings and other meetings, seminars, conferences, deemed necessary by the Laboratory Director.
  • Participates in educational activities relating the field of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as well as those required by UPMC.
  • Perform other related responsibilities as required by the Laboratory Supervisor and/or Laboratory Director and Medical Director.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program, 
  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in Molecular Biology preferred (for Molecular Diagnostics). Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND categorical certification for the specific specialty by the ASCP, 
  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least 2 years experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory, 
  • OR equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA 88 and PA Bureau of Laboratories for technologist performing high complexity testing. 
  • Minimum 1 years experience in a ASHI-accredited histocompatibility laboratory preferred (for Histocompatiblity). 
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in either a clinical or research laboratory preferred (for Molecular Diagnostics). 
  • Medical terminology knowledge and laboratory information system experience preferred.
