Description

Purpose:
The Magee-Women’s Research Institute at the UPMC- Magee-Womens Hospital is seeking a full time Senior Research Assistant. This position will be located at Magee-Women’s Research Institute (MWRI) which is the largest institute devoted to research on women’s health from reproduction to aging.

The position will dedicate 50% of his/her time to the management of the MWRI flow cytometry facility. The incumbent employee is required to operate two BD instruments: LSRII and FACS ARIA Sorter, train independent users, guide user-operators concerning the proper and safe use of instruments, maintain instrument performance, and to perform administrative responsibilities for the Flow Cytometry Core.

Responsibilities:

  • Organize and maintain schedule on Outlook calendar for use by researchers
  • Instruct and educate researchers to proper theory and use of analytical instrument 
  • Ensure operational efficiency and quality assurance and arrange for preventative maintenance and repair of flow core instruments
  • Sole operator of the BD FACSARIA Fusion
  • Provide monthly billing
  • Participate in periodic financial meetings with flow core director, accounting personnel, and COO of MWRI
  • Maintain and update Flow Core services on MWRI intranet site

The remaining 50% effort will be allocated to participating in molecular biological scientific projects in a dynamic research laboratory at MWRI. The research projects encompass performing experiments on human specimens and transgenic mouse models for clinical trials and tissue banking projects. Primary lab duties will require:

  • Cellular processing and maintaining records for human clinical samples
  • Create meticulous records of mouse colony
  • Genotyping and handling experimental mice

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's of Science degree in chemistry, biology or other basic science.
  • Two (2) years of experience in a research environment with at least one year in the designated specialty of research.
  • Master's degree in administration or science and/or five (5) years of biological research laboratory experience is preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of BD FACSDIVA software preferred.
  • Three (3) years of experience using BD digital analytical instrumentation, and as an operator of a BD ARIA sorter preferred.
  • Prior knowledge and use of MS Outlook and Office software products, and the ability to operate PC database applications preferred.
  • BD Operator Course Certification is a plus.
  • Ability to communicate in a collegially manner with colleagues, investigators, physicians, and other personnel.
  • The individual in this position must be highly motivated and able to function independently.
  • Must possess exemplary organization, time management, analytical, decision making and interpersonal skills.
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity necessary for handling and processing specimens for testing, including preparation of specimens, operation of laboratory equipment, microscopic examination, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately collect, store and interpret research data.
  • Successfully meet all competency requirements established for a Senior Level Research Assistant.
