Purpose:
The UPMC Susquehanna team is searching for a Part Time Trauma Registrar to join their team.  This role abstracts, codes and enters into the trauma database all cases of patients who are diagnosed and/or treated as trauma at Williamsport Regional Medical Center (WRMC). This position maintains the efficient operation of the Trauma Patient Registry ensuring consistency and quality within the established data collection system. This position ensures compliance with the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation requests for data.

This part time position has the flexibility to create their schedule during the week, so long as they complete 24 hours (working Mondays are preferred).  Sound like a fit for you?  Apply today!

Responsibilities:
  • Abstract from the trauma patient medical record relevant information required for the hospital registry and the Pennsylvania Trauma Outcome Study (PTOS), including selection and coding of diagnoses and procedures using ICD10-CM, and calculation of trauma and Injury Severity Scores accurately and efficiently.
  • Accurately maintain the computerized registry system, which includes keying data, making additions and/or corrections as necessary. This will also include maintaining accuracy of the statistical database, generate monthly reports, and respond to special requests for statistical information.
  • Attend and participate in Performance Improvement Patient Safety (PIPS) activities and meetings in order to demonstrate an awareness of the hospital�s commitment to provide excellence in trauma care by supporting the Trauma Program�s service management objectives.
  • Conduct concurrent review of trauma patient records within 48 hours of admission and enter select information into the database to provide current information for quality assurance, outreach, education, and public relations purposes.
  • Ensure that all of the PTOS information is accurate, complete, and submitted within the time frames established by PTOS protocol. This is done by maintaining communications with the state Trauma Registrar and/or PTOS analysts for purposes of clarifying information or respond to requests for clarification of information.
  • Identify appropriate trauma patients by monitoring on a daily basis the Emergency Department and Admitting Department identification systems.
  • Maintain and expand current knowledge base through attendance at appropriate departmental and/or hospital meetings, seminars, conferences, and by studying job specific reference materials.
  • Perform additional trauma patient medical record abstracting or audit activities for quality assurance, research, education, of for the purpose of identifying and addressing documentation deficiencies.
  • Works collaboratively with the Trauma Program Medical Director, Trauma Program Manager, and the Trauma Program Performance Improvement Coordinator to collect, organize, and disseminate results.
  • Works collaboratively with the Trauma Program Medical Director, Trauma Program Manager, and the Trauma Program Performance Improvement Coordinator to ensure that all trauma standards are met.

Qualifications

  • Associates preferred. 
  • Prior ICD-10 CM coding experience required. 
  • Abbreviated injury scoring (AIS) experience preferred. 
  • Medical terminology, anatomy and physiology and a brief overview of medical records
  • The requirements of the Pennsylvania Trauma Registry and the American College of Surgeons, trauma guidelines
  • Administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology; principles and processes for providing customer and personal services which includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction; the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Certified Trauma Registrar preferred
  • Practical Nurse licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania preferred.

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Basic Life Support
  • Osteopathic Respiratory Care or Respiratory Care Practitioner
