Description

UPMC is hiring a full-time Medical Lab Technician to help support the Automated Testing Laboratory! This role will support the night shift, and will also be scheduled for rotating weekends and holidays. 

You would have the opportunity to provide for the accurate performance of routine and STAT laboratory testing. These tests are used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients and in the evaluation of a patient's response to treatment. 

You would also be able to apply competent clinical knowledge to achieve accurate clinical testing which leads to quality patient care outcomes. This role works in conjunction with and under the supervision of the Medical Technologists.

Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance and personnel policies. Enter accurately patient demographic information and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system, while ascertaining adequacy of patient information as well as sample identity.
  • Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and independent judgment recognizing priorities to accommodate department needs and acceptance of appropriate authority.
  • Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; responds to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Maintain instruments following procedural calibrations, quality control, and daily maintenance and troubleshooting when necessary.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies for those functions for which the position is responsible; uses materials and reagents in a cost-effective manner.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures according to established protocols with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner. Recognize critical, abnormal and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols. Inform supervisory personnel and/or pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents.
  • Train and orient new employees, students and residents, as applicable and as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in a laboratory science or Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) from an accredited institution, 
  • OR Certification from an accredited Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) program, 
  • OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP preferred,  
  • OR Equivalent education and experience as defined by CLIA 88 for individuals performing high complexity testing. 
  • Prefer minimum 1 year experience in a hospital laboratory. 
  • Need to know Medical terminology and laboratory information system.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT(ASCP)) or Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification preferred.
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance
