The Plant Engineer Lead is responsible for the daily supervision of all employees assigned. The position is responsible for supervising and performing an assortment of duties of engineer duties such as: operating, troubleshooting, testing and repair of the hospital?s steam plant, steam distribution system, and water treatment for boilers, chillers, and closed loop systems. The Maintenance Engineer Lead is also responsible for scheduling and providing coverage for off-shifts, weekends, and holidays.


  • Work in close communication with department management, Infection Control, and EH&S to assure that the facility needs are met and efficient operation of the facility is not compromised.
  • Address and provide guidance to staff through technical issues that provide for safety and without compromise for facilities operations and patient care.
  • Inspect work site for cleanliness and safety.
  • Estimate the approximate cost of new installation into labor and material.
  • Responsible for obtaining quotes from vendors for material and/or services.
  • Responsible for all regulatory documentation related to plant operations.
  • Responsible for investigating all equipment and operational problems on off-shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Responsible for 24/7 coverage for the boiler plant.
  • Investigate, schedule, and plan service outages (including emergencies) when necessary for repair, alteration or additions to systems while not compromising safety or operation of facility operations.
  • Responsible for testing, treatment, monitoring, logging/tracking and adjustment of chemical treatment of steam boilers, cooling towers and closed hot water and chilled water systems.
  • Operates, maintain, test, troubleshoots, and repairs high pressure steam system and hot water boilers as well as the steam plant.
  • Responsible for setting-up appropriate level of infection control containment (ICRA) based on risk level and maintaining the integrity of that containment.
  • Perform all work following infection control procedures; maintain clean and safe work areas.
  • Assure all staff are properly trained in job skills and safety procedures along with details of equipment and maintenance operation.
  • Work with manager to ensure adequate staffing levels.
  • Review, schedule and distribute all shop work orders on a daily basis.
  • Coordinate project work with Facilities Development contractors and end users to ensure completion of assignments in a timely manner with minimal interruption to operations.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of appropriate codes and regulations.


  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Any combination of two (2) years trade school background or three (3) years experience working as a stationary engineer or an HVAC mechanic is required.
  • Building management system (DDC) knowledge preferred.
  • Previous healthcare experience preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver?s License. City of Pittsburgh Stationary Engineer License is preferred. EPA Universal Refrigerant License is preferred.
