UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

An experienced trained educator with experience in special education services, the teacher will serve as part of the interdisciplinary team and work on maintaining the childs age appropriate academic abilities. The teacher is familiar with children who may require special accommodations or modifications in the school environment.. The teacher is uniquely suited to meet the childs needs while on the unit, and to help your child prepare the school environment for re-entry. The teacher will serve as a liaison between the hospital and school system so that teachers and students will know what to expect and be prepared


  • Implements daily program of activities and routines.
  • Write developmentally appropriate units of instruction (behavioral objectives and activities) with input from therapists.
  • Share information, verbally or in writing, with parents about child's progress.
  • Keeping regular contact with school administrators to provide any pertinent information (related to injury, length of stay).
  • Maintain confidentiality about children and their families at all times.
  • Conduct ongoing evaluations of children to assess progress and to identify any potential developmental difficulties.
  • Work with the school district to ensure child's absences are excused for medical treatment, etc.
  • Facilitate any other school-related needs.
  • Conducts periodic formal parent-teacher meetings as needed and meets frequently with parents informally
  • Work with current school districts to develop IEP
  • Informs medical team of significant parental communications such as injury, behavioral difficulties, illness, etc.
  • Help facilitate a peer in-service to let classmates know what has happened, and what to expect when the child returns.
  • Conference into school planning/special education planning meetings.
  • Work with our neuropsychologist to set up appropriate accommodations needed at the time of returning to school (e.g., Individualized Education Program, 504 Plan).
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team to reintegrate back into the community and school setting



  • Masters Degree in Special Education
  • 1 year of experience as a teacher in an equivalent role.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to interact in a supporting, loving and consistent manner with children.
  • Ability to plan and implement educational programs and developmentally appropriate activities.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Active PA teaching license
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
