Across UPMC, our guiding principle is to always prioritize the safety of our employees, patients, and members. UPMC believes that vaccination is important, helps protect all, and advocates that everyone who can be vaccinated should be vaccinated.

UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

HVAC Mechanic, Daylight


Troubleshoot, repair, maintain and calibrate various refrigeration and HVAC equipment, computer systems in the Hospital and the Medical Arts Buildings.


  • Perform a wide variety of mechanical, electrical, and piping repairs, as well as the installation of new equipment as directed. This includes, but is not limited to pumps, fans, motors, building systems, pneumatics, wheelchairs and beds.
  • Communicate with other maintenance personnel and, as instructed, assist them in the performance of their duties. This would include such areas as refrigeration, carpentry, and electrical.
  • Maintain work area and equipment in clean and orderly manner.
  • Maintain records of operation of chilled water centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, related pumps and control systems.
  • Operate all refrigeration and HVAC equipment and control systems in a safe manner and according to established policies and procedures. Frequently review departmental policies and procedures and maintain a working knowledge of the same.
  • Observe all sanitation and safety regulations as outlined in hospital policy or as good judgment dictates.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to meet customers' needs. Is willing to make extra effort to meet customers with courtesy, respect and concern. Recognizes fellow employees as internal customers.
  • Display respect for the opinions of others. Accept constructive criticism. Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Complete preventive machine work order forms and repair work order forms, providing all information as instructed, so that accurate records of repair and maintenance performed, as well as materials used, are current and readily available.
  • Perform duties as assigned by authorized personnel to meet emergency situations, or as dictated by hospital policy. This includes, but is not limited to, fire or bomb threat situations.
  • Demonstrate dependability through good attendance and punctuality.
  • Make a daily inspection tour of all refrigeration and HVAC systems to determine if they are functioning properly.
  • Maintain a good working knowledge of all shop equipment so that parts can be fabricated and/or repaired.
  • Adjust, calibrate, test and repair function parts of devices and control instruments that are components of the HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • Request that parts and materials are purchased as part of the repair and maintenance of the facility, and use all materials in an efficient manner.
  • Make recommendations to Director about how methods and procedures can be improved.
  • Make all necessary repairs, adjustments and calibrations, and perform preventive maintenance on refrigeration and HVAC equipment and control systems. This includes air conditions, refrigerators, coolers, ice machines, chillers and all associated pneumatic and electro-pneumatic control systems.
  • Maintain and repair mixing boxes, thermostats, hot and chilled water coils, induction units, duct and duct dampers (both smoke and fire), all air motor driven louvers, and pneumatic and electro-pneumatic controls.
  • Attend all mandatory in-service programs, including monthly departmental meetings. Attend optional in-service and continuing education programs on a voluntary basis.
  • Render services or perform work in accordance with specified Departmental productivity standards.
  • Work holidays and shifts as scheduled.
  • Comply with the Department's current dress code policy.
  • Work cooperatively with all hospital personnel in accordance with hospital policy, regulations and standards.
  • Assure significant information regarding department activities and concerns follow the appropriate channel of communications.



  • High school degree or GED equivalent required.
  • Two years medium or high pressure boiler plant experience required.
  • Two years experience in healthcare maintenance required.
  • Refrigeration experience required.
  • General knowledge of email, Word and other common software programs preferred.
  • May in the course of their duties be in rooms where medications are stored. No contact with medications is allowed.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Driver's License
  • Stationary Engineer
  • Universal Resource Recovery Certification
  • Act 34
