The Senior Clinical Engineer Program Direcror provides administrative oversight of repairs, inspections, and preventive maintenance on all patient related medical devices used throughout UPMC, hospital affiliates, and institutions contracting for services with BioTronics Inc. within multiple facilities. They rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish assigned tasks and goals. This position will supervise, coordinate, provide leadership to and review the work of assigned staff, evaluate and recommend changes in methods or procedures in assigned areas of responsibility, and act as a liaison between other facilities, departments, units, service lines or organizations that the Clinical Engineering Department provides services.

This position will work daylight hours and travel to other faciltiies will be required but a vehicle will be given for these travels. 

Responsibilities:

  • Participate actively in hospital and medical staff committee structure.
  • Understand and operate all standard test equipment
  • Participates in on-call rotation and scheduling as indicated by director.
  • Complete annual competency base performance evaluations of Clinical Engineering staff inclusive of BMET, Radiology, Sterilizer, IT/Networking and Surgical Instrument personnel at multiple facilities.
  • Assist Director in developing related operating and capital budget projections and assess impact of those projections on department's objectives.
  • Provides administrative oversight of repairs, inspections, and preventive maintenance on all patient related medical devices used throughout UPMC, hospital affiliates, and institutions contracting for services with BioTronics Inc. within multiple facilities.
  • Participate in continuing education and the development of all Clinical Engineering staff within multiple assigned facilities and/or service lines.
  • Drive savings through the reduction and monitoring of outside service contracts.
  • Control and maintain the department monthly expenditures within assigned facilities and/or service lines.
  • Understand and implement specific regulatory requirements
  • Direct productive and efficient operation of multiple Clinical Engineering Department and/or service lines at separate facilities.
  • Provide continued support of student internship program within Clinical Engineering.
  • Maintain records of all work activities in the Computerized Maintenance Management System
  • Provides consultation to administration, nursing, and medical staff regarding operational, training, application and technological advancements of medical instrumentation.
  • Provide hospital-wide in-service education programs and electrical safety and participate as an outside lecturer in Clinical Engineering at multiple facilities.
  • Travel between UPMC sites, hospital affiliates, and institutions for services with BioTronics Inc. is required as needed. Use of personal vehicle may be required.
  • Provide sourcing support and capital equipment evaluations. Participate in vendor negotiations at the discretion of the Director

 

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree and 10 years of experience OR 12 years of experience plus Associate's degree or equivalent military experience or completion of BMET Apprenticeship Certification.
  • Superior knowledge of electronics, digital circuitry operations, Information Technology, and surgical instrumentation (as applicable)
  • Superior knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, physics, chemistry, optics, pneumatics, hydraulics, hospital structure and regulatory requirements (as applicable)
  • Superior Computer skills as required to operate a Computerized Maintenance Management System and common office software including but not limited to MS Office
  • May in the course of duties be in rooms where medications are stored. No contact with the medications is allowed.
