The RN Central Bed Controller is a professional nurse (RN) who works independently and cooperatively with the Director of Capacity Management to meet the department strategic goals, hardwire process changes, and to oversee the operations of the central Patient Placement Operations Center (PPOC). The Central Bed Controller acts as a resource to the internal and external customers to appropriately apply patient movement workflows and to direct business related inquiries. Provides leadership to the team through continuously monitoring, analyzing, and improving the performance of department activities. Demonstrating flexibility in meeting the department needs, the Central Bed Controller assumes delegated responsibilities from the Director of Capacity for operational and personnel activities that relate to quality, cost and outcomes. The individual is responsible to oversee the onboarding of new employees and to provide ongoing education to employees. Maintains flexibility with assigned duties while handling multiple tasks simultaneously. Presents a professional, confident, helpful first impressions to the internal and external customers. Maintains confidentiality in all matters.
The RN will provide escalation needs for admissions, work with licensed and non-licensed staff, and have autonomy in decision-making for admissions.
Schedule: Hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. or 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Days of week are flexible based on staffing. Holidays and weekends are rotated with other RN staff.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborates with the UPMC Medcall staff, Administrators on Duty (AODs) of the acute care hospitals and environmental services leadership to optimize capacity and timely patient placement.
- Collaborates with system stakeholders to facilitate patient flow
- Serves as a resource on patient movement to the department staff and system stakeholders
- Demonstrates optimism, enthusiasm, and effective communication with all levels of the healthcare team reflecting concern for both patients and employees well-being.
- Empowers the team to take ownership of their actions and responsibilities
- Supports change management within the department to hardwire processes
- Ensures compliance with confidentiality and HIPAA.
- Demonstrates professionalism through accountability and confidentiality.

- Assists the Director of Capacity to provide follow-up events and issues in a timely manner.
- Supports the essential process of sustaining and improving performance by utilizing available resources including customer service feedback.
- Promotes open communication and positive staff interactions with both internal and external customers
- Assess staffing needs for current and upcoming shifts to optimize resource utilization
- Supervises the daily work and assignments of the central patient placement coordinators and consultation specialists.
- Able to fulfill the role of a central patient placement coordinators as listed in their job description.
- Maintains competency in all software programs, processes and reporting tools used in the department
- Develops and facilitates the orientation process for all department roles.
- Ensures that all orientation forms and checklists are completed in their entirety and placed in the employee?s departmental file.
- Collects data for quality measures, report preparation and reviews
- Provides follow-up education as indicated in response to quality concerns.
- Provides department and system capacity information during local or systemic internal and/or external emergencies.
Qualifications
- Current professional nurse licensure in the state of Pennsylvania.
- BSN preferred.
- Minimum of two (2) years of acute care experience.
- Must demonstrate good decision-making skills and ability to think under time constraints and with various amounts of pressure.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Computer literacy/data entry skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Act 33 with renewal
- Act 34 with renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
