UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Nurse Navigator

What can you Expect as a Nurse Navigator?

The Nurse Navigator functions as an advocate for the patient and their family regarding OUD and NOWS before, during and after Parent Partnership Unit stays and acts as a liaison for resources and services. You will serve as a clinical resource and consultant to members of the healthcare team and provides staff development and will participate in the evaluation of patient care and specialty services and programs through quality improvement activities.

You will collaborate with the interdisciplinary team in guiding the patient and family regarding diagnostic and treatment options and provide emotional support specialized patient care, support, and educational needs while assuming the role of care coordinator and patient advocate throughout the process. Core responsibilities for the Nurse Navigator are providing health promotion, disease prevention, and nursing care while cognizant of SUD specific needs, developmental status, culture, ethnicity, and sexual orientation to individual patients and members of the community as well as participating in the evaluation of patient care and programs through quality improvement activities. You will identify and coordinate performance improvement activities, including monitoring, evaluation, and development of appropriate outcomes; participates in processes to implement change.

You will also monitor changes in legislation and regulations to assure that effective actions are taken in a timely and consistent manner as well as assess and address the educational needs of individual patients and members of the community, regarding health issues with an emphasis on specialty practice. Participating in the evaluation and development of patient education materials and providing individualized teaching based on needs of the patients and the community as well as coordinating tests, treatments, referrals, and appointments as necessary to meet the physical, spiritual and psycho-social needs of the patient and family are also responsibilities of the Nurse Navigator. You will also work as a team member to plan, develop, market, and implement community health and wellness educational programming and health care services, with an emphasis on specialty care.

Shifts/Hours: Our Nurse Navigators work Monday through Friday with availability to work some weekends. As this position gets settled we may expand services to other hospitals and this position may be required to travel to educate/roll out new programs. There is ability to flex up hours depending on department need.

  • 3 to 5 years of current clinical experience (women’s health, SUD, OUD, NAS, NOWS, etc experience HIGHLY preferred)
  • BS/BSN preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
    • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Act 33 Child Clearance
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
  • Act 34
  • Act 31
