Actuarial Internship 2023- UPMC (Paid)

Description

The UPMC Insurance Services Division is seeking Actuarial Interns for Summer 2023!  The actuarial profession applies knowledge of mathematics, probability, and statistics in order to identify issues and analyze data on a wide variety of topics affecting the financial performance of UPMC’s Insurance Services Division.  Internship positions are available within multiple lines of business in our Health Insurance book, as well as Property & Casualty positions within our Workers Compensation team.  Interns will be expected to lead a project pertinent to their line of business.

The actuarial internship program will be on a hybrid basis (combo of work from home and in-office) from the Downtown Pittsburgh office.

This is a PAID internship starting at $25/hr and adjusted for exams passed.

Qualifications:

  • Strong technical and analytical skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite (e.g. Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Some experience with SQL, R and/or SAS
  • Working towards an Actuarial Science degree or other related field in STEM
  • At least 1 actuarial exam passed is strongly preferred
  • Intern is pursuing associateship or fellowship from the Society of Actuaries (SOA) or Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS)
  • Responsibilities:
  • Work with actuaries at the company to analyze emerging trends and other key drivers of financial performance
  • Provide insights to leadership along with recommendations to complex business problems
  • Assist senior actuarial positions in the development of mathematical models in connection with other departments to predict the impact of proposed changes
  • Provide analytical support for rate development and filings
  • Learn about the different roles an actuary plays within a Health Insurance and Property & Casualty company
  • Communicate clearly and concisely in both written and verbal deliverables
