UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Provide organizational leadership and strategic direction for infection prevention, quality improvement, and regulatory processes, including Joint Commission, CMS and other state and regulatory accreditations for UPMC Hamot and healthcare facilities. Designs, directs and facilitates implementation of effective systems to evaluate infection prevention, quality improvement, regulatory compliance and continuous survey readiness. Collaborate with the other UPMC Directors and interface with system Regulatory and Accreditation Specialist in the Center for Quality, Safety and Innovation. 



  • Develops and implements the Performance Improvement Plan in support of the Patient Safety Quality initiatives. Supports Medical Staff functions for peer review.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments as to the state of compliance to all applicable regulations and standards.
  • Regularly update local and system management on status of regulatory performance at supervised facilities.
  • Effectively collaborate and communicates with all levels of the organization and UPMC.
  • Independently, conducts research activities and monitors, compiles and analyzes data from infection control surveillance of patients and personnel to identify epidemiological levels of disease and to develop appropriate prevention and control measures.
  • Serve as a resource on a broad range of regulations and standards.
  • Serves as a primary consultant in infection prevention for members of the healthcare team of Hamot Health Foundation and all affiliates to facilitate delivery of quality patient care and cost containment.
  • Oversee and support the organizations compliance with all Pennsylvania Department of Health regulations.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Collaborate with other Director of Regulatory & Accreditation Services in establishing successful practices and conducting mock surveys.
  • Consults with Managers, Supervisors and Clinicians to change processes impacting patient safety and quality across inpatient units/departments based on standards of care.
  • Oversee and support the organizations compliance with non-financial, clinically based CMS regulatory requirements
  • Ensure that Administrative policies are current and compliant with all requirements
  • Stay abreast of proposed and new regulations and standards and initiates action to ensure compliance.
  • Responsible for oversight, development, planning and implementing the strategic initiatives of the infection prevention program; develops and implements the infection prevention plan, provides direction to healthcare workers (physicians, nurse and allied health professionals) providers in the delivery of optimum quality care to patients within the designated clinical specialty.
  • Coordinates the distribution of data from clinical and hospital information systems to demonstrate quality impacts and cost effectiveness of clinical initiatives to improve patient care
  • Facilitate the accomplishment of organizational goals and imperatives.
  • Participate in system Quality, Safety and Regulatory teams.
  • Oversee and support the organizations compliance with all Joint Commission Standards.
  • Educate managerial, medical, and clinical staff to regulations and standards to develop an informed and effective health care team.
  • Assist in review of Health Services Division and Health System Policies.




  • Master's Degree required
  • 7-10 years Healthcare Related Experience required, with 5-7 years Supervisor Experience preferred
  • Certification in related area of expertise preferred.
  • Experience with Center for Disease Control, Department of Health, Joint Commission, CMS, and other regulatory requirements and survey processes.
  • Must have strong knowledge of infection prevention and public health desired.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities Requirements:

  • Strong Computer skills Excellent interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communication
  • Strong organizational skills to manage large amounts of data
  • Public speaking and facilitation skills

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Infection Control Certification through the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology required; Joint Commission Professional Certification through the Joint Commission preferred (Must be obtained within 2 years of employment).
