The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

The Billing Specialist I confirms that all patients scheduled are accounted for, all services provided are charged for the date of service, and all charges are accurately and timely entered into the department ancillary charge system, (SurgiNet). Assures compliant initiation of supply billing entry into the department ancillary charge system, (SurgiNet). Ensures that the charge capture reconciliation process is maintained and sufficient.


  • Confirms that all patients scheduled are accounted for : Using SurgiNet: Case Selection application, the Billing Specialist checks for each scheduled procedure, notes cancellations and add-on procedures.
  • Opens each procedure in SurgiNet to assure accurate entry for OR TIME entry, Implant Log entry & Procedure Entry. All of which initiate default billing.
  • Ensures that the charge capture reconciliation process is maintained and sufficient.
  • Billing Specialist reconciles department billing by comparing procedures, or time, anesthesia, PACU and supply items from ancillary system (SurgiNet) have posted in MediPac.
  • Billing specialist monitors any pending billing that will require follow up and or corrections as needed.
  • Communicates with vendors and staff to assure compliant initiation of supply billing entry into the department ancillary billing system.
  • Contacts nursing staff & educates when necessary to correct documentation (or charting) into ancillary, SurgiNet system in support of billing entry.
  • As needed and only when the billing has not been built into the ancillary system (SurgiNet), the billing specialist will manually enter billing codes into SurgiNet to initiate billing to MediPac.
  • Accurately prioritizes information and refers it to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintains confidentiality with respect to any and all information learned through performing this role.
  • Accepts responsibility for personal and professional growth.
  • Attends department meetings (unless otherwise excused).
  • Arrives at workstation ready to work at scheduled time, i.e., start of shift, breaks, lunch, etc.



  • High-school Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two years billing/accounts receivable experience in Healthcare facility or Physician office setting, preferred.
  • Operating knowledge of basic business office equipment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in working on computer system.
  • Must have knowledge of use of Microsoft Excel and Word requires interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with a wide range of people, exchange information on factual matters, understand and transmit instructions.
  • Interactions require good customer service skills and basic common courtesy.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
