2800 is a 28-bed high risk antepartum unit with a welcoming staff and a teamwork-focused environment. Our work includes non-stress tests, stent and cerclage placements, and wound debridement; we partner closely with the physician team to care for high risk pregnancies, preterm labor, C-sections, and methadone conversions, as well as delivered patients with infants admitted to the NICU and fetal demise mothers. Due to the nature of the unit, our patients can experience very high highs and very low lows, and are in need of uniquely compassionate attention and care; staff on 2800 must be empathic and stout of heart.
What can you Expect as a Patient Care Technician?
The Patient Care Technician provides patient care including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living and assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies. They provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.
The Patient Care Technician performs the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities (blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections and Foley care) and at least four of the following BU identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12 lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley catheter removal, point of care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal. They also must routinely perform the UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients as well as point of care testing (inc. blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs). In addition, they may also apply simple dressings, placement, and removal of restraints, 12 lead EKG, bladder scan, all specimen collections. All competencies must be achieved.

Shifts/Hours: Rotating shifts, two 12-hour shifts per week. Hours are either 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. Must be willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- One of the following:
- 1 year of experience
- Enrollment in PT/OT/PA Program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation
- Completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field
- Advanced Skills (req’d as needed based on unit need & patient population): Phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, Basic Arrythmia Course Completion (for telemetry and ED units)
- Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class preferred
- EMT or Paramedic (or in a program) preferred
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
- Act 33 with renewal
- Act 34 with renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance
*Other clearances may be required based on department of hire
