Description

UPMC Altoona is hiring a full-time Supervisor Physician Assistant to support the Trauma services. This will be located at a Level 2 Trauma Center. The schedule for this role is 12-hour shifts - 7am-7pm, 7pm-7am - each day of the week. 5+ years of experience preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides departmental leadership to direct, supervise, and manage daily activities of the PA's; completes annual performance evaluations in conjunction with support staff.
  • Participates in recruitment, evaluation, and management of PA employees.
  • Implements, maintains, monitors, and communicates Human Resources policies pertaining to PA's.
  • Facilitate training of staff for all PA's.
  • Oversee staff adherence to compliance requirements including documentation, coding, licensure, internal and external audits, compliance, and safety training (OSHA).
  • Organize and oversee staffing of clinical sites with attending physician and Director of Trauma Services.
  • Troubleshoot problems in clinical areas. Work in conjunction with clinical staff to resolve issues.
  • Collaborate with mid-level providers from other disciplines within facility. This would include communication to the division management and physicians on behalf of the mid-level providers, as well as communication to the MLP's from management.
  • Primary contact for patient complaints or other clinical issues on behalf of the physician in his/her absence.
  • Act as a liaison to and preceptor for PA and CRNP students.
  • Assist staff in preparation of conferences.
  • Perform those duties outlined in the Physician Assistant job description.
  • Assist with the preparation of Trauma Site Surveys.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the patients served as specified below 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span  
  • Possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs  
  • Provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures 

Special Skills and Abilities Required:  

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families 
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment 
  • Handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment 
  • Critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care 
  • Good clinical judgment 
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and lead others in application of acceptable standards of practice 
  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity 
  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients 

This position is dependent upon successful attainment and maintenance of hospital privileges, if applicable to the Business Unit practice. 

Post-baccalaureate degree required 5 years as a physician assistant or relevant managerial experience required (at least 3 of the 5 years from APP experience)3 years' experience in the department specialty preferred PA: A graduate of a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) is required. This position is dependent upon successful attainment and maintenance of hospital privileges, if applicable to the Business Unit practice.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • A graduate of a physician assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the physician assistant (ARC-PA) is required 
  • BS or MS candidate is preferred 
  • Experience as a physician assistant and/or experience in a clinical setting is preferred 
  • Current state PA license certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required 
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
