Description

UPMC is looking for a Senior Wireless Engineer to join their team. This position will be ON-SITE supporting our Madison Avenue location however there will be some chances at remote work.

Purpose:
Under the direction of the management team and senior staff, the Senior Wireless Engineer is responsible for the day to day maintenance and support of the wireless systems. The Senior Wireless Engineer reviews, organizes, communicates, and records requests for wireless network additions, deletions, and/or changes within the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMCHS), and/or affiliated businesses. Provide technical assistance to departmental personnel, clients, vendors and other parties as assigned to meet business requirements or provide continued network services. Create, manage, track and report the status of assigned project plans, using the specified Project Management software. Additional responsibilities and accountabilities include basic configuration of network security hardware and software, enforce security policies, and perform network compliance activities. Works closely with all UPMC departments and business units, ISD departments and/or groups, as required, to meet business objectives, resolve problems, complete assigned projects, provide technical assistance in accordance with assigned responsibilities, and when necessary, coordinates with other telecommunications resources in carrying out the assigned responsibilities. This position also interacts with vendors, suppliers, internal UPMC management, and external management of affiliated business units.

Responsibilities:

  • Review all assigned UPMC network client specialized service requests, received through request notification systems (i.e Cherwell system, pages, electronic mail, etc.) responds to client requests, within service level, providing information as to service(s) and lead-time to meet objective. Coordinate with client in service delivery activities and all requirements to meet the request, keeping the client current on the status of the service request (i.e. phone call, email, etc.).
  • Provide ISD Level II support services for problem calls escalated by the ISD Help Desk and coordinate with UPMC personnel and vendors to resolve issues. Report back to ISD Help Desk and user on problem status until resolved.
  • Candidate must be highly motivated to apply process improvement (CMMI) to increase product and service quality to achieve business objectives.
  • Manages HP Aruba and Cisco, wireless with both centralized and remote management. Responsible for small projects, as assigned. Coordinate and direct activities related to project goals and completion. Provide project reports, as required and document project status and related information.
  • Uses packet analyzers and other network sniffer tools to troubleshoot and isolate issues.
  • Coordinate and support installation of data communications network hardware including, but not limited to Access Points, Wireless Controllers, routers, switches, servers, personal computers, etc. as outlined and documented in assigned project(s) and/or initiative(s).
  • Understand and explain network topologies, network hardware and protocols.
  • Provide on-call support (non-business hours) as established and in accordance with ISD Technical Services Department Policies and Procedures, Service Level Agreements, and any other documentation or directives, as determined by the Manager, Wireless Communications, and/or the Director, ISD Network Services.
  • Develop working knowledge of multiple communications protocols.
  • Comply with UPMC, ISD, and ISD Technical Services Department Policies and Procedures.
  • Control project costs and communicate any project-related expenses to project manager.
  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of wireless network security hardware and software.
  • Attend ISD and related meetings, as required.
  • Balance quality of work with deadlines and budget.
  • Provide service to ISD client community, patients, families and visitors, while protecting the integrity and confidentiality of all data and information through physical and electronic measures.
  • Provide on-call support (business hours) as established and in accordance with ISD Technical Services Department Policies and Procedures, Service Level Agreements, and any other documentation or directives, as determined by the Manager, Wireless Communications, and/or the Director, ISD Network Services.
  • Record time spent on assignments (projects, initiatives, requests) in accordance with ISD and ISD Technical Services Department Policies and guidelines.
  • Assist with wireless network trouble-shooting.
  • Apprise project manager of status, schedule variances, and outstanding issues.
  • Display ability to troubleshoot and correct wireless network problems remotely and on-site.
  • Keeps abreast of trends and changing technologies in IT, wired and wireless Data Communications, Information Security, and Network Security.
  • Plan, publish, maintain, and distribute technical documentation pertaining to UPMC Data Communications network including pictures, procedures, practices, and problem determination guidelines as requested or assigned by the Manager, Wireless Communications, and/or the Director, ISD Network Services.
  • Maintain electronic documentation, as defined by the Manager, Wireless communications, for all UPMC facilities, as approved by the Manager, Wireless Communications, and/or the Director, ISD Network Services.
  • Provide support as required by ISD's Disaster Recovery Plan.
  • Assist with wireless network sizing.
  • Display understanding of service levels and up-time.
  • Additionally, this position may be required to maintain a stand by status as part of a rotation within the team. This requires 24 hours per day, 7 days per week availability during the stand by period. The frequency varies based upon the number of colleagues in the rotation.
  • Provide support as required by ISD's Disaster Recovery Plan.

 

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Typically has 5+ years of wireless communications infrastructure design and support experience. Knowledge base for an IT professional.
  • Solid understanding of core IT knowledge in Data Communications
  • Understand both wired and wireless connectivity.
  • Ability to manage wireless networks.
  • Knowledge of IT principles and analytical rules that guide them in practical situations.
  • Complete on-going training on-the-job, through courses, self-study, certifications and/or advanced degrees to maintain and enhance technical and business capabilities.
  • Demonstrate thorough understanding of the fundamental tools and concepts of one of the information technology professional disciplines (i.e. Applications, Business Analysis, Customer Service, Data, Networking, Operations, Security, Systems Engineering, etc.) and apply that understanding to make independent practical contributions to IT work within a particular UPMC department or function.
