Description

UPMC Palliative Care is looking for a casual Music Therapist to join their dedicated team at Magee Hospital.

As a member of the Palliative Care Program Interdisciplinary Team, the primary focus is to provide music therapy service to palliative care patients and their families in accordance with the interdisciplinary plan of care. The music therapist also consults with others on the therapeutic uses of music and coordinates educational in-services regarding music therapy. Goal areas addressed by the music therapist may include: Relaxation and anxiety reductionReminiscence/life reviewDecrease perception of painQuality of lifeFacilitate communication with family membersSpiritual supportIncrease range of coping mechanismsReality orientationCognitive stimulationEmotional expression Increase self-esteem/self-acceptanceDecrease feelings of isolation/rejectionMusic therapy interventions used may include: Therapeutic singing, song choice, improvisational music making, guided imagery, entrainment, songwriting, progressive relaxation techniques, lyric analysis, recorded music, visualization, composition, music listening, and procedural support music therapy.

This role will work four hours a day, twice a week. No weekends or holidays.

Responsibilities:

  • Musical skills are demonstrated with competence and including: soothing singing voice, guitar and piano proficiency, and knowledge of other recreational instruments.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of music therapy research and uses best practices in clinical interventions.
  • Maintains Board Certification by the CBMT and complies with continuing music therapy education requirements.
  • Incorporates the knowledge of the unique issues related to death and dying, grief and loss.
  • Educates palliative care staff members on the appropriate use of the music therapy program and encourages referrals from all clinical staff and volunteers.
  • Uses music therapy to treat a variety of medical, psychological, emotional, spiritual, and social needs of patients/families in an age-appropriate manner.
  • Completes all documentation in a timely manner and per agency policy.
  • Demonstrates good communication skills and an ability to facilitate communication among patient/families.
  • Provides music therapy sessions to patients/families in accordance with the plan of care.
  • Uses music that is consistent with patient/family cultures, religions, and values.
  • Knowledge of a variety of musical genres and styles.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patients and families.
  • Collects data as to the effectiveness and relevance of music therapy as it pertains to improving quality of life for the patient and the impact of how this service positively enhances palliative care services.
  • Follows appropriate standards of practice as set forth by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO).
  • Ability to recognize patient/family strengths and weaknesses as well as their support systems.
  • Represents the facility in a professional manner at all times.
  • Completes any training and/or paperwork required by UPMC or the University of Pittsburgh to provide music therapy services for the patients.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in music therapy or related with MT-BC credential; or eligible for credential Master's degree in a creative arts therapy or related degree with credentials ( MT-BC, ATR-BC, BC-DMT) or eligibility for credentialing is preferred.
