Workers Compensation Underwriting Technician

Description

UPMC and Workpartners has an exciting opportunity for a Workers Compensation Underwriting Technician. This is a Monday through Friday daylight role (regular, full-time) with hybrid work arrangements. 

The Workers Compensation Underwriting Technician reports to Program Administration Manager. Responsible for providing Underwriting, Risk Control, and Claims with information necessary to make sound underwriting decisions (i.e., marketing, customer service and administrative support affecting brokers/insureds from initial submission through policy issuance and renewals). Provides support within established performance standards and priorities that are responsive to marketing, underwriting, retention and service goals. Assures all related support activities are delivered in a manner consistent with business unit customer service and expense management focus.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Policy Transactions: Processes new insurance policies. Gathers and organizes specified information and reports to assist the underwriting department. Distributes quote letters and/or insurance policies to agents, brokers, underwriters, and/or insureds. Completes entry with the appropriate name clearance system and indexes all supporting documentation in the underwriting file. Processes endorsement requests. Processes renewal insurance policies.
  • Tropics: Performs necessary system transactions. Assists in the administration of web based agency/client portals. Assists in the release of weekly, monthly and other periodic reports.
  • Miscellaneous: Responsible for processing quality, timeliness and file maintenance; Meet productivity and quality goals/expectations. Work independently to make sound business decisions. Reviews incoming business transactions and related information for completeness, accuracy, and quality. RiskMaster data entry (policy information and hierarchy) & maintenance. Perform other related support duties as requested, such as answering phones, processing mail, assisting customers, scanning, photocopying etc.
  • Customer Service: Communicates effectively with Commercial Workers Compensation team. Responds to policy service requests from underwriters, agents, and brokers. Requests additional information required to handle an account. Works with underwriting and others to resolve any discrepancies. Communicates with brokers/agencies, insureds/customers and internal departments (i.e., researches and resolves issues, responds to inquiries and questions). Resolves customer inquiries, complaints and services requests. Process other insurance transactions to provide customer service and support efforts to acquire and retain profitable business.

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma (or equivalent)
  • 3 -5 years of customer service and/or administrative experience required
  • 1 year of Insurance, Workers' Compensation, or Underwriting experience OR a Bachelor's Degree is required.
  • Current producer's license is required, or must obtain within 6 months of hire
  • Communicates in a clear, concise, professional manner.
  • Listens carefully and attentively. 
  • Understands customer needs and acts on them. 
  • Demonstrates timely responsiveness to customer requests.
  • Effectively organizes work to meet business objectives.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize work.
  • Analytical skills to identify gather and organize information.
  • Demonstrated initiative to complete assignments and achieve targeted results.
  • Ability to work in a team environment to support overall profitability initiatives.
  • Solid organizational skills including time management, prioritization and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of administrative procedures and software applications (such as Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Ability to service and maintain a strong relationship with Brokers.
  • Casualty license preferred
