Description

UPMC Health Plan is hiring a full-time Improvement Specialist Intermediate to support the Quality Improvement department. This role will work standard daylight hours, Monday through Friday. The team is based out of downtown Pittsburgh's US Steel Tower and this role will work in a hybrid structure.  

The Improvement Specialist Intermediate is responsible for contributing to system-wide and departmental quality improvement initiatives. This involves performing the assessment and analysis of operations and processes, leveraging solutions from dependent and related projects, generating new perspectives, frameworks or innovations that enable organizational improvement. Additionally, improvement specialists work collaboratively with staff and leadership to design and implement improvements and innovations at UPMC. In order to achieve defined outcomes, the improvement specialist engenders commitment, fosters cultural changes, disseminates information, and provides support for behavioral and process changes. The overarching focus of the improvement specialists' work is member-centered, staff vitality, process efficiency and waste reduction, and safe and reliable patient care.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Leads improvement utilizing various approaches such as Improvement Science/Agile/Lean or others as appropriate.
  • Partners with all system divisional leaders to implement and deploy system and local change.
  • Utilization of multiple sources of organizational knowledge to accelerate improvement and drive innovation.
  • Measures and utilizes varied approaches to analyze and interpret data.
  • Leads and engages teams across the enterprise and interacts with all levels of executives.
  • Works to ensure improvement project teams are high-functioning collaborative efforts.
  • Leads improvement project teams in ways that support and develop partners systems perspective and inquiry mindset.
  • Creates a supportive environment in the department that is sensitive to the issues and needs of that area by regularly consulting with the Director and front-line staff.
  • Assesses institutional/departmental readiness and identifies strategies to achieve goals.
  • Effectively coordinates the assessment of current operational processes at various UPMC entities.
  • Works to ensure that quality improvement and innovation work remains focused on one or more of the following goals: patient centeredness, staff vitality, process efficiency and waste reduction and safe and reliable patient care.
  • Supports the synthesis of learning across improvement projects.
  • Accelerates improvement by building connections between improvement and organization efforts.
  • Effectively communicates improvements that are made to work teams, staff, managers and administrators throughout the organization and UPMC Health System.
  • When opportunity arises, represents UPMC by presenting accomplishments to regional and national forums.
  • Assures project management skills are utilized to lead progress towards goals by collecting accurate, timely data to display the quality, cost and service outcomes.
  • Maintains accountability for ongoing self-development activities, especially related to presentation, facilitation, change management and application of quality improvement activities.
  • Ensures knowledge of improvement methodologies, change management frameworks, tools/techniques, and technology is current with the rapidly evolving industry.
  • Anticipate key project issues and implement comprehensive recommendations to achieve desire outcome.
  • Generate new perspectives, frameworks, or innovations that enable problem resolution.
  • Direct and execute creative analytic approaches/ create new or adapt existing analytical methods and tools to solve problems.
  • Understand, analyze, and structure undefined, complex, and politically sensitive projects.
  • Generate innovative ideas which are strategically sound and challenge the status quo.
  • Systematically convey pros and cons of alternative solutions to complex, sophisticated, and sensitive issues and achieve consensus on direction/ approach.
  • Stimulate strategic thinking by internal clients.
  • Become recognized as a valued thought-partner by internal clients.
  • When assigned, completes special projects and performs other related duties according to agreed upon goals and parameters.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Organizational Change Management, Health Administration, Business Administration, Education, Nursing or related field required at time of hire/transfer.
  • Masters degree in Organizational Change Management or Health Administration OR completion of minimum of two years in a four-year Bachelor's to PhD/DNP program preferred.
  • Minimum five years related experience with minimum of two years experience in healthcare setting required.
  • Knowledge of information systems and process improvement techniques.
  • Knowledge of effective in-person and virtual facilitation techniques.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams in continuous improvement efforts.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and communicate with data.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities required as related to supporting and driving continuous improvement efforts within the health plan.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment and handle multiple/changing priorities.
  • Ability independently manage and work on multiple projects.
  • Candidate must demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to interact and negotiate with all facets of the wellness industry.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • UPMC approved certification preferred.
