Clinician/Clinician Fellow - 8A ICU

UPMC Mercy is currently hiring a full-time Clinician/Clinician Fellow to support its 8A ICU department!

 

Title and salary will be determined based upon education and nursing experience.Those with 2 years of experience and/or those without their BSN will be brought in at the Clinician Fellow title and pay range. Salary as shown is for a Clinician. 

 

The 8A Medical Intensive Care Unit at UPMC Mercy is a 18 bed critical care unit that serves patients of the Greater Pittsburgh area and across the region. The MICU serves a wide variety of patients, including the neurological, neurosurgical, trauma, medical, and surgical population. Nurses receive training to care for critical care, stroke and trauma patients, with certifications in BLS, ACLS, and ENLS.  Advanced skills utilized include the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale assessment, hemodynamic monitoring, IV insertion, and phlebotomy. Many procedures and interventions are performed at the bedside, including insertion and maintenance of external ventricular drains, endotracheal tubes, tracheostomies, chest tubes, central lines, continuous renal replacement therapy, prone therapy, and induced hypothermia. Critical care physicians, nurses, patient care technicians, case management, social work, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists work collaboratively as the ICU care team to ensure the best care for the patient.  MICU RNs also respond to Condition A and C emergencies in the hospital as part of the Rapid Response Team.

 

Clinicians work in collaboration with their Unit Director, management, and other caregivers to coordinate clinical activities for each shift, develop and educate staff on the unit, and improve the nursing process. Clinicians inspire superior performance on their unit through example, not only by exhibiting their own expertise in patient care assignments, but also by providing ongoing consultation and education for their team, including in-service demonstrations of new devices, equipment, and policy changes.

 

As Clinician, you will be a positive force on the unit, a relationship builder who promotes open communication among caregivers and forges connections between colleagues, patients, and patients’ families. You will also directly contribute to a culture of nursing excellence by participating in the selection, training, development, and evaluation of our staff.

 

The Clinician, in collaboration with other health care professionals, applies superior clinical knowledge and skills to achieve quality patient care outcomes. The Clinician is responsible for providing service-based education and clinical expertise for staff including orientation and training, consultation on practice issues and general coordination of clinical activities on a shift basis. They must demonstrate the knowledge and skills to provide care that is relevant to patients under their care, as well as apply principles of growth and development over the life span. The Clinician also must possess the ability to assess and interpret patient data needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age specific needs. The Clinician demonstrates a commitment to the community and to the nursing profession.

  • Disseminates new knowledge and innovations through presentations, posters, and publications.

  • Serves as a leader in clinical nursing practice, identifying patient and staff focused opportunities for improvement and leading the change process.

  • Identifies, educates and supports the psychological and learning needs of staff during change and transition.

  • Practices participatory leadership and is an active member of shared leadership at the unit, facility or system level.

  • Assumes formal leadership responsibilities for one or more of the following: quality improvement, evidence based practice, GN or new hire on-boarding.

  • Assists the Unit/Department Leader with the peer review process.

  • This Clinician position will focus on family communication and quality assurance

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years of nursing experience for Senior Clinician title 

  • Minimum 3 years of nursing experience for a Clinician title

  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience for a Clinician Fellow title

  • Masters degree preferred 

  • BS/BSN required for Clinician/Senior Clinician title.

    • If BS degree not in nursing, a Master's or higher degree in Nursing is required

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.

  • Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.

  • Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.

  • Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.

  • Mobility and visual manual dexterity.

  • Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.

  • Demonstrated competence as a Professional Staff Nurse.

  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.

  • They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse.

  • UPMC approved nursing certification required within 1 year of hire/transfer and must be maintained for Senior Clinician level.

  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

  • CCM training required within the first 60 days of hire and annually thereafter. Must have unit specific experience

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

  • Registered Nurse (RN)

  • Act 34
