UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Director, Clinical Operational Informatics

Description

Purpose:
Oversees the education, planning, development, design, implementation, optimization, and ongoing evaluation of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) and all IT systems, electronic applications, and interfaces. Examples include Teletracking, Telesitter, Cerner, EPIC, Sunquest, Nurse Call and Lippincott. Serves as a clinical liaison for all portions of the EHR that impact clinical processes and patient care.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Improve and/or support others in improving the safety, health, and well-being of patients by providing technology that enables clinicians to improve the quality of patient care by increasing the safety of patients.
  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by demonstrating accountability for actions, enthusiasm, motivation and commitment to patients and colleagues. Demonstrates an understanding of cultural differences and holds peers accountable for healthy relationships. Models safe work hours, time management and healthy lifestyle. Communicates with peers and management any safety hazards identified in the workplace.
  • Recognize symptoms of project problems and react quickly to solve them. Coordinate the planning, design, development, implementation, and optimization of technology platforms across all venues. Collaborate and communicate with the IT team, staff, and providers to facilitate successful adoption and optimization of EHR. Work closely with the information systems director to identify, select and maintain the electronic equipment needed to utilize the EHR. Oversee the collaboration of various departmental end-users in the design/decision making processes needed to analyze current operation procedures, identify problems, and learn specific input and output requirements of data for future electronic needs. Monitor and evaluate end-user needs. Oversee a wide range of activities associated with the implementation and/or upgrades of new technology systems for all employees. Oversee the coordination and maintenance of downtime activities, policy, and procedures Coordinates planned and unplanned downtime processes to minimize impact to patient care. Oversee the development of training programs to educate end-users on new and/or upgraded applications. Oversee the development and communication of policies and procedures to ensure the effectiveness of systems applications and software changes as related to patient care.
  • Manage complex interactions between applications being implemented and various hospital and outpatient department processes and workflow. Manage human interactions, politics and organizational issues between multiple departments working on multiple problems simultaneously. Identify management information needs for patient care in all settings and facilitate access to the technology and education necessary to meet those needs. Collaborate and communicate with all levels of the organization to facilitate the accomplishment of the corporate UPMC EHR and technology goals. Coordinate and recommend EHR enhancements for all departments to support patient care. Serve as a resource and consultant to various disciplines in order to develop a fully integrated, non- redundant technology platform for UPMC.

 

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • BSN or BS in Health Related field required.
  • Relevant Master's degree required.
  • Advanced project management skills necessary to demonstrate the ability to plan, implement and manage complex projects.
  • Demonstrated strong and effective interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of various aspects of clinical informatics and EHRs.
  • 5 years of leadership/management experience.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Clinical professionals who had a state-regulated license shall be expected to maintain their license in good standing while employed in this role. ANCC Nursing Informatics or CPHIMS certification preferred (required within years of informatics employment).
