Bereavement & Spiritual Supplemental Coordinator


UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is seeking a Full Time Bereavement & Spiritual Support Coordinator to support the NICU Department!

The Neonatal ICU is a 77-bed Level II & Level III critical care facility that provides acute medical, nursing, and respiratory care to critically ill infants; the majority of NICU admissions come from within Magee, however, we do also regularly take transports from other regional hospitals. Patients in the NICU may be premature or full-term infants who suffer from a diversity of medical issues including (but not limited to) low birth weight, infectious diseases, congenital anomalies, and Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, as well as various complications during labor and delivery. Previous ICU and/or pediatric experience is preferred; NICU experience is strongly preferred. 

This position will work dayshift hours.

The Bereavement & Spiritual Support Coordinator is responsible for providing direct chaplaincy services to patients in concert with established spiritual programs as well as supervising the spiritual and bereavement programs and delivery of related services. This role will provide counseling and emotional support to the active and bereaved patient/family units and staff. In addition, this role will provide support and training for spirituality programs throughout the UPMC Palliative and Supportive Institute.


  • Develops and coordinates a program of Bereavement and Spiritual support services with PSI staff, to include protocols for implementation, oversight, and documentation of the bereavement care plan
  • Develops and coordinates the implementation of Bereavement and Spiritual Support Services.
  • Documents and assesses bereavement needs At admission, and continuously during the time the patient is receiving palliative care
  • Collaborates with Interdisciplinary Team to develop bereavement plan of care
  • Coordinates grief support groups, hospice memorial services for family members, hospice staff, and volunteers
  • Train, coordinate, assign and supervise bereavement volunteers as appropriate.
  • Participates in volunteer and staff education related to bereavement care.
  • Referring individuals to community resources as appropriate, including clergy and community hospice agencies.
  • Develops interdisciplinary tools for spiritual assessment and support
  • Supports patients and families' self-determination
  • Participate in hospital Ethics Committee


  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university OR Associate's Degree and 2 years of relevant experience, with additional experience from a medical, education, or service agency required.
  • A Master's Degree in Social Work, Mental Health, and/or Counseling preferred.
  • Documented experience dealing with grief and bereavement required.
  • Experience working with patients who have experienced perinatal/neonatal loss is preffered

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
