UPMC Health Plan has an exciting opportunity for a Sr. Project Manager in its Quality Improvement department. This position and team are based out of downtown Pittsburgh's US Steel Tower; however, the position will primarily work remotely but select meetings may require in-person attendance. This position will work standard daylight hours, Monday through Friday. 

This position will involve oversight and accountability for the Case Management and HEDIS Coordinator teams in a matrixed environment. The goal of the day-to-day work for these teams is achieving improved quality outcomes for UPMC Health Plan members by direct interactions with our members, providers, and/or provider staff. This position will be instrumental in leading and supporting clinical quality multi-disciplinary teams as assigned in the development, implementation, and evaluation of quality performance improvement initiatives.

This role requires excellent project management, organization, and prioritization skills. The candidate will also need to have a comfort level analyzing and presenting data outcome information. Familiarity with HEDIS and CMS Stars measures would be beneficial in this role as well as the ability to be self-directed. This position will report directly to the Sr. Quality Improvement Director of Provider Performance.



  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships both internally and externally to set goals, resolve barriers, and make decisions enhancing organizational effectiveness to achieve the goals of the organization.
  • Establish and maintain excellent communication with senior leadership
  • Work in tandem with other members of the health plan to advance the mission of the health plan and the UPMC at large (medical management, quality, network, health promotion, pharmacy, etc.)
  • Initiate, set goals and new initiatives according to the strategic objectives of the organization and department ensuring all deadlines and milestones are met.
  • Work with various data analytics staff members and have a comfort level interpreting and presenting detailed and accurate reports
  • Assist with facilitation and coordination of interventions (provider, member, and community) to improve quality metric rates. 
  • Possess skills in motivation, and self-direction, and demonstrates a strong work ethic.
  • Enhance efficiency and productivity of procedures and people.
  • Demonstrate the ability to think strategically and creatively, manage multiple priorities concurrently, adjust to changing circumstances, organize time efficiently, remain attentive to details and identify resources for projects.
  • Support the Novillus Care Gap Management medical record review work as the primary clinical/quality contact for the QI Novillus PM
  • Support annual HEDIS supplemental data work by compiling and providing required documents to NCQA Auditors related to Novillus Care Gap Management medical record review process
  • Collaborative work with the HEDIS Program Director and QI Data team to maintain a solid audit process throughout the year addressing any audit concerns with Novillus medical record reviews and mitigating any risk of non-compliance with the annual NCQA primary source verification audit.
  • Provide monthly and year-end quality metric rate reporting to internal Health Plan management/executive staff
  • Responsible for hiring, orientation and ongoing management of all assigned staff. Responsibilities include but are not limited to, conducting regular performance appraisals, providing constructive feedback and direction for improvement. 
  • Demonstrate a professional and positive leadership style with staff, encourage an inclusive team approach and model best practices.



  • B.S. degree in Business, Mathematics, statistics, Health Care, Management, or related field.
  • Master's degree preferred (extensive related experience will be considered).
  • 5 years of project management experience.
  • Experience in health care insurance or health care industry preferred.
  • Excellent computer skills required, including Access, Excel, Microsoft Project, and other pertinent computer software packages.
  • Strong management, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills (oral and written) are required.
  • Excellent Project Management skills along with effective planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to perform planning for large initiatives/projects, managing all tasks required to provide services to meet client and business needs within budget and targeted deadlines.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Minimum of PMP, PM, or Six Sigma Certificate with advanced project management certification preferred.
