UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Plumber - UPMC Mercy & New Mercy Pavilion


UPMC Mercy is hiring a full-time Plumber to support the Maintenance and Facilities department! This role will work variable shifts, but primarily daylight with rotating weekends. 

This position covers the entire existing UPMC Mercy campus including the brand new UPMC Mercy Pavilion, a state-of-the-art building designed for Rehabilitation and Vision Restoration & Research. The entire campus is served by a central plant, Clearway Energy LLC, providing steam, chilled water, and emergency power. The pavilion has integrated the latest building controls automation systems, energy-efficient heating/cooling systems, and brand new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.


  • Inspect, install, repair and replace pipes, fittings and plumbing fixtures to maintain the heating, water, gas and drainage systems of the hospital with a consciousness of safety hazards and cost containment efforts.

  • Plan installations by studying blueprints and work sketches to determine kind and size of pipe to use and special fitting necessary.

  • Mark cutting and bending lines with chalk and cuts pipe along layout markings with pipe cutter or hacksaw.

  • Remove burrs or rough edges from pipe with a reamer.

  • Cut thread on pipe with hand or powered pipe threading machine and bends pipe over block by hand to produce corrective curvature.

  • Fit valves, couplings and other specified parts and fittings to pipe sections by screwing, bolting, or soldering.

  • Seal connections by forcing seal material into joints with pneumatic caulking hammer or yarning tool.

  • Cut passage holes in walls and floors, through which pipe is to pass, with an electric hand drill and narrow blade saw.

  • Install pipe assemblies and plumbing fixtures.

  • Screw threaded pipes and fitting together with adjourning pipe assemblies.

  • Bolt flanged sections and solders or pro-press connections to make them watertight.

  • Attach pipe assemblies to walls or ceilings with brackets or hangers.

  • Install plumbing fixtures and connects them to outlet and inlet pipes by fitting gaskets, couplings, traps and valves, and soldering connections to seal joints.

  • Repair and replace all piping systems, including gas, steam, air, oxygen and nitrogen, etc.

  • Inspects all connections and other parts of system for leaks, noting gauge readings to detect loss of pressure.

  • Replace defective pipe by cutting, bending, threading and assembling pipe.

  • Solder and caulk leaks and broken pipes.

  • Open clogged drains with plumber's snake or vacuum plunger and thaws frozen pipes.

  • Replace worn washers or other parts in leaky valves on taps.

  • Estimate material requirements and prepares requisitions.

  • Prepare daily and monthly time sheets and various other written reports as requested. Responsible for clean-up and removal of plumber's supplies and equipment from work area.

  • Must be able to rotate all shifts, weekends and holiday work schedules.

  • Required to carry an assigned work phone to be contacted, receive work orders and to close out work orders received.

  • Must possess the ability and knowledge to operate and maintain power equipment/tools, both stationary and portable, pertaining to the maintenance field.

  • Must have the ability to install/repair water supply piping, fixtures and fixture traps, soiled waste and vent piping, storm water piping and sprinkler piping.

  • Must have good knowledge and ability of soldering, brazing, pipe threading, all methods of installation of copper, black iron, galvanized, Victaulic and plastic piping.

  • Must be familiar with Allegheny County plumbing codes. May in the course of their duties be in rooms where medications are stored. No contact with medications is allowed.

  • Must be able to move 50lbs.

  • Must possess the ability to move throughout the facility's various buildings, roofs, tunnels, and confined spaces.

  • Must be able to perform all forms of appropriate maintenance work or repairs on various forms of ladders, scaffolds, man-lifts, and safety equipment to complete work assignments at extreme heights.

  • Good knowledge of locks, keys, and master systems.



  • High School graduate or equivalent required.

  • Trade or vocational school graduate preferred.

  • A four-year apprenticeship or equivalent on-the-job training is preferred.

  • Must be self-motivated, good decision maker and able to deal with multiple priorities in emergency conditions.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Allegheny County Plumbing license preferred.

  • Stationary Engineer license (City of Pittsburgh) preferred.

  • Medical Gas license preferred.
